Moore Leads Maine Contingent at BSR Elite Scholastic Mile

The second annual BSR Elite Scholastic Mile was held at Regis College on Friday evening. Maine was well represented on the girl's side with three entrants (Samantha Moore, Teanne Ewings, and Cary Drake) and Maddox Jordan in the boy's race.

RESULTS

Portland junior Samantha Moore ran a strategic race, positioning herself wisely on the rail early on to avoid any unnecessary distance. The field, including Moore, crossed the first 400m mark in 70 seconds. Teanne Ewings, a junior from Houlton/GHCA, found herself pushed out into lane two initially but settled into third place as the pack reached the 800m mark in 2:27. As they approached the final lap, Ewings maintained her position in third, while Moore advanced to fifth and Cary Drake of York held onto eighth place.

In a tightly contested finish, Dana Lehr of Belmont, MA emerged victorious with a time of 4:54.64, just edging out Rory Sullivan of St. Raphael Academy who finished with 4:55.14. Moore displayed remarkable determination, battling down the homestretch to secure fourth place in a personal best time of 4:56.27. Her performance elevates her to the third-fastest time in Maine state history for the 1600m, trailing only the records set by Bethanie Brown (4:49.85) and Abbey Leonardi (4:51.57).

"I thought it was very exciting and fun to race such great athletes." Moore said of the opportunity to compete in the Elite Scholastic Mile  "It will make me more confident going into the rest of the season after getting that time for my first mile, my goal is to get the all-time record this season."

Ewings crossed the line in seventh place, achieving a new personal best of 4:57.48 and lowering her 1600m record to 4:55.75, which stands as the sixth-best in state history. Despite juggling lacrosse commitments this spring, Drake delivered a strong performance, clocking 4:59.06, a season-best. Her time last year still ranks her as the fifth-fastest in state history for the 1600m event.

In the boys' race, Noble senior Maddox Jordan showcased his prowess in just his second outdoor race of the season, securing ninth place in the mile with an impressive time of 4:11.91, narrowly missing his personal best. Last week, Jordan kicked off his senior season at the Penn Relays mile, clocking 4:15.38. His early season efforts hint at a promising trajectory for the talented athlete, who previously clinched the indoor New England title in the mile this winter.

With a notable personal best of 4:10.35 from last spring, ranking him fifth in state history, Jordan has his sights set on climbing even higher in the record books by the end of this season. His immediate focus lies on attaining state qualifying marks for the MPA state championship scheduled for June 1st, after which he can continue his pursuit of faster times.
