Class A Boys
The Eastern Maine Regional will have a familiar look this weekend, as the same teams from the KVAC Championship meet held last weekend will square off again. #8 ranked Mt. Ararat was very strong in winning the KVAC title last weekend by 14 points over #11 ranked Mt. Blue. The Eagles had 3 runners in the top 10, but more importantly 2 runners in front of the Cougars #1 runner, and their 3rd runner was just a second back. Mt. Blue ran well at the KVAC meet with a 33 split for the 1 through 5 runners, they'll need to break up the top 3 of Ararat to have a shot at them. #10 Edward Little will be looking to rebound after a 3rd place finish at the KVAC meet, the Red Eddies have been hampered by illness and injury this fall, but do have the best 1-2 in the Eastern Regional, so don't count them out.

Individual Race
Coming into the race, Harlow Ladd (Messalonskee) is the favorite, Ladd is coming off a dominating win over the same competition at the KVAC meet. At the KVAC Championship Ladd won the race by 25 seconds, he'll be looking to carry that success over to this wekeend. Last time Ladd ran at Belfast was for the FOC meet, there he finished 2nd running 16:11 against a top quality field. Other contenders are Faisal Noor (EL), Noor was 2nd at the KVAC meet, and ran just one second behind Ladd earlier in the year at Messalonskee, where he clocked his seasonal best 16:09. Another runner to watch out for is Mt. Ararat's Andy Reifman-Packett who has had a great year, Packett was just .2 seconds behind Noor last week, and equalled Ladd's time over 2 mile at the Mt. Blue Relays.

#3 ranked Caribou is the heavy favorite heading into the Eastern Maine Regional, the Vikings are the defending regional champions, and are coming off a fine performance at the PVC Large School Championship meet last weekend. At the PVC meet the Vikings had 5 of the top 8 finishers, with an impressive pack time of 45 seconds for runners 1 through 5. Earlier this fall at FOC, the Vikings finished 4th. #12 Hampden is a team to watch for, the Broncos are coming off a win at the KVAC Class B Championship. Hampden also had a strong showing at FOC, finishing 10th. 7 teams will move on to the State Meet from this region.

The individual race should be one of the day races of the day between KVAC Class B Champion Eben Hodgkins (Erskine) & freshman standout Dan Curts (Ellsworth), the PVC Large School champion. These two runners have strong 2010 campaign, Hodgkins has clocked the fastest time in Class B this year, with his 16:32 clocking on his home course, and last week was the 2nd overall finisher in the KVAC meet combining the two classes. Curts has been the top freshman in the state all year, he backed that up with a win at the Manchester Invite freshman race, and again at FOC where he placed 8th, clocking 16:47. Others to keep an eye on are Evan Piccirillo (Hampden) he was 11 seconds back of Hodgkins at the KVAC meet last weekend, and has a top time of 16:56 run at Belfast during FOC. Another athlete not to sleep on is Christian Sleeper (Caribou) who ran 16:54 at the FOC meet placing 14th, and last weekend was 2nd at the PVC meet behind Curts.

The Bangor Christian Patriots coming off a win at the PVC Small Schools Championship enter this weekend as the favorite for the Eastern Maine title. The Patriots took down Orono by 17 points to win the PVC title last weekend, buoyed by 3 runners in the top 8. Orono looks to be the only school to give the Patriots a serious challenge, they have individual title threat Alex Bulteel leading the way.

This race should be a good duel between Alex Bulteel (Orono) & Matt Guiod (Mattanawcook), they have squared off 4 times this fall, with each athlete winning 2 contests. They head into this weekend even in head to head matchup, but Bulteel has the momentum as he won the PVC Small School title last week, and in the process defeated Guiod by 34 seconds. Bulteel's time was a seasonal best 16:34. Guiod was the runner-up at PVC's, and added 28th place finish at FOC, clocking 17:15 on the same course they'll be racing at this weekend

#4 ranked Mt Ararat is the heavy favorite to capture their 2nd Eastern Maine title in a row. The Eagles put on a running clinic at the KVAC Championship, placing 6 runners in the top 12, and 7 in the top 18. The competition will be the same this weekend, on a much faster course, so things shouldn't change much in a week. If the Eagles run like this again they could be under 30 points which would be a huge statement. Other ranked teams in the region are #10 Mt. Blue, who was 3rd at the KVAC meet behind Brunswick. The Cougars had an off day at KVAC's, so they will be looking to rebound on Saturday, Mt. Blue was 7th at the FOC meet earlier in the year on the Belfast course, so that confidence should carry over.

The individual race in Eastern Maine looks like a runway for Brunswick junior Katie McMahon, who won the KVAC title last weekend against the same competition by 47 seconds. McMahon has had a very strong year, running to a 6th place at the FOC (19:26), and three otehr times runing 19:20 or faster with a seasonal best of 19:18. Her seasonal best is over a minute faster than the #2 ranked runner, Meaghan Collier. Collier finished 19th at FOC, clockig 20:38 on the Belfast course, last weekend she was 7th in the KVAC Championship. KVAC runner-up Emma Wood is another runner to keep an eye, Wood has been very consistent in leading the Eagles this Fall, her best time came at Brunswick where she ran 20:26.

#3 ranked John Bapst is coming off a win at the PVC Large School Championship. The Crusaders have been the top girls team in Eastern Maine Class B all year long, and one of the state's best too. Bapst's has a very strong 1-2-3 punch up front that is unrivaled in Eastern Maine. They are undefeated against Class B teams this fall, and have only one loss on the season, that coming to #1 ranked Cheverus at FOC, where Bapst's showed they were for real earning the runner-up spot. Last weekend at the PVC meet they were 16 point better than the runner-up MDI. If any team is to give Bapst a push it would be the MDI, who always seems to peak at the right time each year. They have a young squad with 3 freshman in their top 4.

Individual Race
Old Town senior Dacie Manion has been on a roll in 2010. Manion comes into the Eastern Maine Regional with the fastest 5k time, 19:07, which she clocked in winning the PVC Large School title last weekend. Dacie heads into the meet as the defending Regional champion, she was 5th at FOC this year on the Belfast course running 19:19. Others to watch out for are Alecia Palmer (PI) who was runner-up to Manion at the PVC meet, 23 seconds behind in a seasonal best 19:30. Palmer was 13th at FOC earlier in the year. Bapst's Adrienne Carmack has been at the front of every race this fall, including a 10th at FOC, she's coming off a 3rd place finish at PVC's, clocking a seasonal best 19:37. Freshman Brittany Bowman (Camden) has had a great first year on the trails, last weekend she won the Class B KVAC title, running 20:46 on a tough course, her time was 3rd best on the day. Bowman ran well at Belfast during FOC, where she clocked the 9th fastest time of the day 20:01 when she finished 2nd in the freshman race, she finished ahead of everybody but Manion that day.
This should be a good match-up between Orono & Lee Academy. Last week at the PVC championship, Orono triumphed over the Pandas by 7 points, so they have the mental edge. Orono had the edge at spots 1-2 & 5 while Lee Academy had the better 3 &4 runners. If Lee Academy is able to get their 5th runner up a bit that could have a big impact. With only 5 teams having 5 runners entered if looks like 3 teams will be moving on to next week's state meet.

Individual Race
Chelsie Oldfield (Foxcroft) is the pre-meet favorite to capture the Eastern Maine title, Oldfield was 2nd in the meet last fall, and is coming off a domination performance in winning the PVC Small School title last weekend, when she won by 1:10. If Oldfield continues to run like that she won't be looking at anything but open space. Earlier this fall Oldfield finished 24th at FOC on the same course, running 20:58. Orono freshman Rowan Wilson looks to be the next best in the field, Wilson finished 2nd to Oldfield at the PVC meet.
