WMC XC Championship Preview Sam Bonsey Oct 12, 2017

The WMC Championships are set to go off Friday afternoon at St. Joseph's College in Standish. The Yorkgirls' won the Division 1 title last year, while Falmouth, who is no longer in the conference, took the boys' title. In Division 2, the St. Dominic girls' and Wells boys' were winners.

Hampden Academy is the top returning Class A team based on 5k results from all returners this fall. The Broncos placed third in the state meet a year ago behind champion Scarborough & runner-up Falmouth. Don't count out the Red Storm as they will be shooting for their third straight Class A title.

Last season was one with a lot of ups and down for the Yachstmen, they finished seocnd in the Western Maine Regional before having several varsity runners suspended for breaking school rules the next week which left Falmouth short handed for the Class A state meet, despite this they finished a respectable 4th.

The #2 ranked Falmouth boys cruise, while the #1 ranked Cape girls eek out a 29-31 win over #2 Falmouth girls. Kyle Kennedy was the boys race winner, he clocked the 7th fastest time in course history with his 15:45. On the girls side Rhoen Fiutak remained undefeated as she ran 19:27.

Falmouth opens with a statement Tim Even Aug 30, 2014

Things got under way today for several of the top teams in Western Class A and B at Community Park in Falmouth. Massabesic's Michael Aboud took the boys 2 mile race in 11:05, while Marshwood's Maddy Doyle edged Falmouth's Vishva Nalamalapu 13:31 to 13:32. Falmouth easily was the best team on both the boys & girls side.

The Falmouth Yachtsmen were victorious on both the girls & boys side at the WMC Championship Saturday night. The girls team scored 136 to take the win over York 107, & Greely 91.33. On the boys side the margin of victory was much closer but Falmouth took the 130-125.5 win over York, Cape was 3rd with 65.

Shafer & Evans top the field at WMCS, Falmouth girls & Cape boys top teams Derek Veilleux Oct 19, 2013

Senior Heather Evans of York ran strong from the front to win the girls race (20:21), while Will Shafer of GNG used his strength to his advantage over the final half mile to pull away from Liam Simpson (Cape) to win the boys race (16:26). Falmouth was dominate on the girls team side as they tallied a low score of 39, while the Cape Elizabeth Boys were tops on the boys side with 44.

The Waterville girls cruised to a 7th staright Class B titles, while the Boys win as well to make it a sweep. Kate Hall of Lake Region broke the state meet record in the 100m, 12.12, and added a state all time best in the long jump 18-5 3/4. Bethanie Brown in the 800m, 2:16. Dan Curts of Ellsworth broke the 1600m record, 4:14.02, Nick Danner of Waterville broke the javelin record with a heave of 192-9

Greely Girls & Falmouth Boys prevail in WMC D1 - Traip girls & Wells Boys in D2 Derek Veilleux May 28, 2013

The Greely girls claimed the WMC Divison 1 title with 151 to hold off a strong challenge from the York girls (131). On the boys side Falmouth previaled in a tight 3 team race, the Yatchsmen tallied 140, while the Rangers of Greely scored 133 for the second, while York with 127 was 3rd. In Division 2, Traip Academy took the girls title with 156 points. On the boys side Wells put up 174 to take the title. Kate Hall set 2 all-time Maine bests, 11.68 for the 100m & 24.96 in the 200m, while Denzel Tomaszewski added the state all-time of 10.76 in the 100m. Check out more.

Cape Boys & Falmouth Girls top WM B races Derek Veilleux Oct 21, 2012

Silas Eastman of Fryeburg cruised to the boys WM title as he was able to ease up over the last half of the race to win in 16:47. On the girls side Greely's Kirstin Sandreuter was the only girl in the race below 20 minutes as she stopped the clock at 19:57. The Cape Boys had a strong performance to win by 46 points while the Falmouth girls had a convincing win on the girls side. New England XC Championships: Boys Preview Patrick Bendzick Nov 9, 2011

New England has weathered a freak early season storm, but its disruptive nature has created lasting implications for the New England Championships.  Power outages and muddy conditions across the region wreaked havoc on the post season in many of the participating states. As a result, getting a true sense of the race depth is difficult because of the modifications made to many of the traditional qualifying courses, and the postponement of the Connecticut State Open Championships to November 8th.  But it’s the unknown that makes this sport so exciting.

McClintock & Leonardi fastest on the day in Western Maine Regional XC action Derek Veilleux Oct 22, 2011

The sodden fields greeted the Western Maine Regional XC runners this morning as they arrived at Twin Brook Recreation Park in Cumberland. The Class A girls started the action off, and Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) wasted no time going to front, she would never have to look back as she cruised to the fastest time on the day for any girl, 18:05.59. Cheverus Girls went 2-3-4 despite Emily Durgin not finishing to hold off Massabesic 45-51 for the regional title. The A boys were next, and we saw a repeat as Nick Morris (Scarborough) pulled away over the last 1.5 miles to win in 17:03.3,  while his Red Storm team had 4 in the top 15 to score a low of 61 to defeat runner-up South Portland 101. Class C girls was next, Meagan Thomas Lisbon moved her way through the field to claim the title 21:11.60, teamwise Merriconeag was dominate with 5 in the top 15. The boys race saw Matt McClintock hit the mile in 4:56,  he would run the fastest boys time on the day of 16:00.23, just missing the sub 16 mark. North Yarmouth cruised to the win in the team competition. Class B girls closed out the day with Abby Mace (Maranacook) bouncing back with a strong race, she would cross the line in 19:41.49. Greely pulled the upset for the team title behind 3 runners in the top 12. Silas Eastman (Fryeburg) closed out the race winners on the day taking his 2nd straight Class B title with a fine 16:18.11 performance. Falmouth showed why they are ranked #1 in the coaches poll as they had all 7 runners in the top 23.

12 State leaders headlined by Scarborough Boys state record in Sprint Medley at USM Relays Derek Veilleux Dec 30, 2010

There were 7 new girls state leading marks and another 5 on the boys side at the USM Relays held today at USM in Gorham. On the boys side, the Scarborough Quartet of John Gonzalez, Joe Viola, Scott Merrill & Nick Morris (PICTURED LEFT), clocked 3:40.32 to take off 2.22 seconds off the previous record held by Deering, HS. Other highlights were some fast 55m for both genders, with Nicole Kirk (Scarborough) 7.66 & Adrian Reid (South Portland) 6.74 taking the titles. Falmouth Boys & Cape Girls open with WMC wins Derek Veilleux Sep 3, 2010

The Falmouth Boys opened with a 32-40 win over Cape Elizabeth at Gull Crest Field in Cape Elizabeth this afternoon in the WMC season opener. Falmouth was paced by race winner Tim Follo who ran 16:12 to hold off Cape's Thomas Bottomley (Both pictured left-photo by Beth Rand). On the girls side, Cape Elizabeth pulled put a 25-30 win over the visiting Yachtswomen. Cape senior Kelsey Barton won clokcing 19:40, the only girl under 20 minutes on the three mile course. Falmouth Boys/Girls win meet @ Royal River Park Sep 26, 2008

Falmouth's Jamey Epstein 17:27 won a 4 team meet held at Royal River Park today in a light rain. On the girl's side Carolyn Joseph from St. Dom's held off a large pack of Falmouth runners to take the top spot in 22:21. The Falmouth Boys had a perfect score of 15 for the win, while the Falmouth girls took the top spot with a score of 20.

Rand smashes course record- Greely Boys/Cape Girls dominate teams Derek Veilleux Sep 5, 2008

The story of the day was the record breaking performance of Cape Elizabeth senior Matt Rand, as he broke Miles Bartlett's course record by 5 seconds, running a 15:20.4 over the fast 3 mile course. Greely dominated the boys team race putting 3 guys in the top 5. While the Cape Elizabeth girls lived up to their #1 ranking in the coaches poll, scoring only 19 points to win against some strong competition.

Cape Elizabeth the defending champion returns 6 runners from their squad that dominated Class B last year. York, Freeport, and Fryeburg Academy all return strong teams this fall.
