Scarborough boys made it 3 in a row, Bangor girls win first- State records go down

The Bangor girls erased several years of near misses to win the school's first ever indoor state title at USM on Monday. The Rams held on for the 70.5 to 70 win over runner-up Thornton Academy. On the boys side Scarborough made it three in a row with a 61-57 win over runnner-up Cheverus. Brunswick's Alex Nichols set the state meet record in the 400m (49.93), while Ethan Beaulier equaled the record in the 55m (6.60), & the Cheverus 4x200 shattered the record with a 1:32.96, also good for the all-time state best. On the girls side Deering's Edie Pallozzi set the 800m record with a 2:17.27.

The Bangor girls got a huge boost in the girls pole vault where the Rams finish 1-2-3-5 to score 26.5 points, they would need every one of those points to win the team title. With 3 time defending state champion Lindsey Folsom not making a height, the Rams Courtney Lizotte took the state title jumping 10-0. Teammates Abby Reynolds & Morgan Johnson jumped 9-6, while Danielle Clark got 8-0.

Bonny Eagle Girls won the 4x800 in a state leading 9:55.95 to hold off Brunswick 9:56.63.

55m Podium

Brewer’s Teal Jackson won all three sprints, the senior took the 55m in 7.26, just off the state record of 7.22, and she came back with a hard fought victory in the 400m, using superior strength in the last 60 meters to clock 58.22. She capped off her impressive day with a win in the 200m, again pulling away from the field coming off the final turn stopping the clock 26.16.

Bangor’s Grace MacLean matched the 3 wins of Jackson providing her team 30 important points. She started it off with a 17-5 3/4 leap in the long jump to win by almost a foot. Next was the hurdles where she was the fastest out of the trials with a 8.66, she then went even faster to win the final as she clocked a personal best 8.43. MacLean finished off her day clearing 5-2 to win the high jump.

In the mile TA’s Charlotte Pierce took over during the second lap and never looked back as she cruised to a personal best 5:06.33 victory. Bangor’s Angela Masters the sister of Riley Masters had the race of her life as she ran a huge personal best of 5:16.27, moving from the 4^th seed to 2^nd overall.

Deering’s Edie Pallozzi was content  to hit her splits in the first half of race running with the pack of Nyajock Pan & Samantha Cox, then used her strength to blow the race wide open in the second half of the race en route to a personal  best and state record 2:17.27

Kiera Murray of Cheverus used a strong kick to sneak by Charlotte Pierce of TA in the final meters of the two mile. Murray’s time was  11:35.01 to Pierce’s 11:35.75, Bonny Eagle finished 3-4-5 in the event.

Scarborough once again won the 4x200m relay as ran away from the rest of the field ,  they stopped the clock at 1:50.29, Brunswick running in heat 2 ran 1:52.19 to finish 2^nd.

In the shot put Deering’s Alexis Elowitch had a big day to win the event with a throw of 35-4

Edward Little showed their dominance in the triple jump as senior Lexi Clavet jumped a seasonal best 35-6 ¾, while freshman Ashley Joyner had a huge personal best of 34-6 ¼ for second.

Other standouts in the meet where Bonny Eagle’s Audrey Weyand who was the runner-up in the 400m (58.79) & 200m 26.69 to set new personal bests, she added a 3^rd in the 55m with a 7.52. Samantha Cox of BE was 3^rd in the mile (5:18.49), 3^rd in the 800m (2:2.96) & 5^th in the 2 Mile (12:00.88)

The Scarborough boys found themselves down 20 points with just 5 events to go, but a 1-2 finish by seniors Greg Viola & Alec James propelled the Red Storm back into contention as they would eventually won their 3^rd straight Class A title, and 4^th in 5 years. Viola who just started vaulting the first week of January has just taken off in the event improving at a rapid rate including 3 ft combined in his last two meets. He won the vault with a leap of 13-6, while teammate Alec James the defending state champion in the event cleared 12-6.

Cheverus opened the meet with a near state record in the 4x800, the Stags ran 8:13.85, the time was  a new state leader by 7 seconds.

In the 55m dash Ethan Beaulier of Noble the defending state champion won the trials in 6.68, then equaled the state record in the final with a 6.60, Lewiston sophomore Hassan Mohamed was 2^nd in 6.69.

In the hurdles Gorham’s Julian Nijkamp won a very close race over Andrew Toothaker of Hampden. Nijkamp win is a great story as he has battled a rare kidney illness since last spring. His winning time was 7.96 just .01 better Toothaker.

In the mile Mt. Blue’s Justin Tracy made a big move at the 800m mark to move past Scarborough’s Robby Hall, the two would battle over the last 800m with the two even with 100m to go. Tracy had a little bit left to win in 4:26.18 to Hall’s 4:27.24

Alex Nichols of Brunswick shattered the 400m state record with an impressive sub 50 clocking; his final time of 49.93 not only was the state meet record but equals the Maine all-time best. It wasn’t an easy race though as Biddeford’s James Ociti was breathing down his back the whole way as he finished in 50.26, a time also under the old state meet record. Nichols would come back a short time later with a come from behind win in the 200m. His time was 23.11 just fast enough to hold Hassan Mohamed of Lewiston 23.15 who ran in the previous section

Nichols commented on his 400m race "Coming into the race I knew my ankle wasn't really a worry anymore. It was the 2 weeks of very light practice and I was worried I wouldn't be able to sustain a high speed. I still tried to get out as fast as possible and settle into a pace that would be unsustainable for everyone, so I think I went through in the 23's. I don't really remember the rest of the race, I remember my hands went numb and I think I looked behind me at one point, and then I just tried to hold on for the last 100. I knew I was moving fast but I didn't know how fast until I came around the last turn and saw around 42. By that point I just ran my guts out and leaned like crazy at the end."

The 800m race was probably one of the best of the day. Jamie Ross of Brunswick set the fast early pace, as Brady Foshay and Will Hirnak were right with him. Hirnak took over with 200m to go but Foshay didn’t panic and used his great speed over the last 100m to pull away in the last 50 for the win. Foshay’s time 1:57.47, while Hirnak clocked 1:57.80, Ross ran a personal best 1:58.20 for 3^rd.

Mohamed Barre of Lewiston overcame an sprained ankle to pull away over the last 800m in the 2 mile to win his first individual state title, Barre was the only runner in the field under 10 minutes as he crossed  in 9:55.77

Connor Harris of Edward Little repeated as the high jump champion clearing 6-2, he took 3 attempts at the state record coming closest on his final attempt. He would add a second title in the triple jump as he got better with each jump in the final. Harris improved his state leading mark to 44-10 ¾, 5 plus inches further than his winning jump from a year ago.

Brewer’s Jeremy Bissell took the long jump with a 20-9 leap.

Princeton bound senior Jared Bell threw a personal best 56-0 ¼ in the shot to repeat champion. Duncan Preston of South Portland was second with a personal best 51-2 ¼

Cheverus closed the running events out with a new state meet & all-time Maine best in the 4x200m relay with The team of James Campbell, Brady Foshay, Jake Dixon & Jackson McMann

Clocking a 1:32.96. Scarborough secured the win with a second place finish 1:33.73, a time also under the old state meet record.
