Waterville 3peats, York repeats- Records go down

Waterville girls score 112, York boys repeat, Hall and Brown break 2 records each

The Waterville girls dominated the rest of Class B again as the Purple Panthers won for the 3rd time in a row. They amassed an impressive 112 points, while runner-up Greely put up 69.5 for the runner-trophy. On the boys side York repeated with 76 points to runner-up Foxcroft Academy's 46. Kate Hall set state records in the 200m & long jump, while Bethanie Brown added records in the mile & 2 mile. Donald Boyer added a record in the 55m hurdles, and Denzel Tomaszewski broke his own 55m record.

The Waterville girls showed they are the dominant team in Class B for the 3rd year in a row as they amassed an amazing 112 points. They scored in all but three events. The Panthers got 2 wins from Bethanie Brown (mile, 2mile), Lydia Roy (400m), Kellie Bolduc (Triple jump).

Lake Region star Kate Hall won 3 more state titles, making her 6-6 in the last two years. Hall opened the meet with a state record leap in the long jump, as she leaped 17-11 ½, hitting the winning jump on her final jump in the trials. She would have 4 jumps over 17ft. Hall would run a personal best 7.21 in the 55m trials, she would lower that even further in the final with a 7.17 clocking, a mark just off the state record. Closing out her day star sprinter set another personal best & state record in the 200m, as she lowered the mark over.3 with a 25.62 clocking. The winning margin was over 1.5 seconds.

MaineTrackXC spoke with Hall about her day. "Well going into states, of course my priority was to win before I concentrated on breaking records. I wasn't sure how this year was going to compare to last year with my times and distances and even my competition. the competition definitely is what made me run faster today. that, and the adrenaline and pressure of competing at a state meet. I just would tell myself that I was also competing against myself (trying to set PR's). so I was probably most excited about the 55 because it was just so much faster from what I ran all year, it's my favorite indoor event, and now I have a chance of getting in the top 3 at New Englands. But for my 200m I just knew I needed to get a good start and hopefully not get too tired at the end haha. I felt like I ran that 200 so effortlessly and smoothly and that really helped me on that last stretch I think. My form has held together a lot better in that race this year which I think is one of the reasons why my times have been dropping. Lastly, I didn't really concentrate on any one thing with long jump. I just told myself to go do what I normally do. So because of everyone watching and just the fact that it was states and I was trying to break state records, is why I think I was able to jump my second best ever. and I'm very very happy with how things went today!."

Waterville’s Bethanie Brown was aiming for 3 event win for the second year in a row; she took the mile in a new state record time of 5:00.31 to win by 13 seconds. The time broke her mark of 5:02.15 from last year. In the 800m Brown met her match as she couldn’t get past Ellsworth’s Aleta Looker in the race of the day. Looker kicked home for the win in 2:18.96, Brown was right there on her heels 2:19.30. She would come back in the 2 mile to take down Cassie Hintz’s 10:48.28 record as she clocked 10:46.95, her winning margin was 35 seconds.

Post race Aleta Looker had this to say about the 800m race."I knew that no matter who won, I wanted that racing experience for New Englands. I was planning to try to go for a PR. The energy from the crowds was so powerful that I couldn't really think except to push myself through the finish line in the last 50 meters. To be honest, I couldn't really see."

MDI opened the meet with an exciting victory in the 4x800 as the Trojans edged Greely 10:21.65 to 10:21.82

Traip’s Ashleigh Roberts was the top hurdler on the day; she clocked a personal best 8.87 in the trails to lead the qualifiers into the final. In the final she once again was the best with a 8.90. Waterville scored three places 2-4-7, led by Sarah Shoulta 9.06.

Lydia Roy of Waterville was the best 2 lapper as she ran 61.85 to win the event

Hermon won the final 4x200m relay clocking a 1:53.19.

Greely’s Gwen Swayer continued the tradition of shot put success for the Rangers as she threw 36-10 ½, on the day she had 5 throws above 36ft.

The triple jump was a good one to watch as Waterville’s Kellie Bolduc the favorite was behind until jump 5 where she unleashed a 36-3 ½ jump to get past then leader Jocelyn Lorrey of Traip who had jumped 35-10 ½ to that point, Lorrey came close on jump 5 as she had her best of the day 36-2 ½

Tia Jackson of Old Town won the high jump title with a clearance of 5-2, defending champion Emily Heggie of Fyreburg had a seasonal best 5-0 for the runner-up.

Kelsey Barnes of Traip jumped 10-6 to win the pole vault title, Waterville went 2-3 for 14 points with Georgia Bolduc & Sara Shoulta both jumping 9-6.

York set the tone for the meet in the opening track race the 4x800m relay. Coming into the meet the wildcats were the 8th seed, but that didn’t stop them from getting 10 big points to kick start them on their way to a second Class B boys title in a row.  They would go on to score 76 good enough for a 30 point win

York got a win in the 400m dash from senior Josh Brooks, who ran away from the field for an easy victory. Brooks’s time 51.52 was 1.4 seconds faster than the runner Harrison Stivers of Freeport. Also for York senior Tom Reid carried the team on his shoulders. Reid won the long jump with a personal best 20-9 ¾ leap, a runner-up finish in the 55m hurdles where he ran under 8 seconds, 7.98 and another runner-up finish in the triple jump 41-9.

Foxcroft Academy put together a strong meet to earn the runner-up trophy. Foxcroft got a big day out senior Donald Boyer who broke the state record in the 55m hurdles in the final with his 7.68. Boyer’s winning margin was an unheard of .3 seconds, and the rest of the field was pretty good.  He added a win in the high jump with a 6ft clearance, and added victory #3 in the triple jump with a 41-9 ½ leap, which he did on his very first jump of the competition.  Foxcroft got its other points from Junior Ryan Wang who was 3rd in the 55m, 400m, 200m races.

Denzel Tomaszewski of Wells defended his 55m dash title and broke his own state meet record, but it wasn’t easy for him as he was dealing with a slight hamstring tweak that came about on Saturday. Tomaszewski preserved well enough to lower the state record from 6.58 to 6.53. He would also finish as the runner-up in the 200m, and the 4x200m relay.

MaineTrackXC spoke with Denzel about the injury “It meant a lot I was injured my hamstring and I got worried. I even felt after that race but someone was screaming my time 6.53 and I was really happy but in pain.”

Ellsworth’s Dan Curts won both the mile and 2 mile. In the mile Curts barely held on for the win over Ben Trapani of Camden Hills. Curts clocked 4:39.80 to Trapani’s 4:39.87. In the 2 mile the win was a bit easier as Curts ran 9:55.87 to win over Ben Decker of Yarmouth 9:59.19.

The 800m was an exciting race as Orono’s Tyler White set the early pace with only Azad Jalai of Falmouth going with the pace. The duo passed 600m in 1:29, and Jalai took over the lead and held on to win 2:03.47 to 2:04.0 for White.

Falmouth got another win the 200m from senior Jacob Buhelt who stopped the clock at 23.23. He would also run the leadoff leg on the state champion 4x200m relay 1:36.60

Greely’s James Ferrar bombed the winning throw of 47-6 on his final throw of the trials.

Devin Burgess of Waterville repeated as the pole vault state champion with a 13-6 clearance.
