HS Bloggers: Alex Nichols Brunswick HS #7

Alex Nichols is a senior at Brunswick HS, he is the 2X defending Class A indoor state champion in the 400m. Nichols has a personal best of 49.91 in the 400m & 22.69 in the 200m. Follow along this spring as Alex goes for his first outdoor state title.

Hey everyone!  Now that outdoor is in full swing I think I’ve finally settled in a bit.  So much crazy stuff has been happening; it’s been a pretty hectic season so far.

First and foremost I have decided (finally) that I will be going to Middlebury College next year.  Over April break I traveled around and had a couple overnights before coming to a tough decision to go to Middlebury.  Fun fact: a high school student cannot practice with a college team or it starts their college eligibility as an athlete, so I was not able to train much that week. (Oh, darn.  I’m so upset).  Anyways, Middlebury.  Hooray!

Secondly, my ankle seems to be heeling (that’s right heeling) up pretty well.  It’s not affecting me when I run anymore, though occasionally when I get up in the morning I will have to hobble around for 10 or 15 seconds like a pirate with 2 wooden legs.  But as I said my running is fine, and aside from missing a bunch of practices lately I do feel fast and ready to go.  Hopefully now that all of the college stuff is out of the way I can actually focus on training.

Or not.  AP tests are next week, and prom is this weekend.  In the past I didn’t understand why seniors miss a lot of practice but that’s definitely what’s happening to me.  Hopefully I’ll be able to stay in reasonable shape until I can really start coming to all the practices again, and then go from there.

Back to track.  It looks like I’ll be moving around again in the upcoming weeks as far as events go.  Coach wants me to try the 100 as well as the 4x100, and I want to run a fresh 200 for the first time ever, so I might be shifting some events around and dropping the 400 for a week or so.  I’ve already hit some solid times in the 400 and the 200 so the thought is I should be fine for a while if I try some different stuff.  I’m excited, I haven’t run a 100 since freshman year, and I’m definitely looking forward to it.

Finally, I would like to use this opportunity as a plug for a sweet 5k going on in Brunswick.  The Color ME fun run is going on to help raise money for the Brunswick Art Honors Society.  From what I understand of it, everyone shows up in white and gets blasted with paint as they run the course.  I am not usually up for a 5k, but this looks kinds of awesome.

Good luck to everyone in their upcoming meets!
