Waterville sweeps Class B titles

Kate Hall breaks her own Maine all-time best in the long jump with a leap of 18-5 3/4. Brown breaks 800m state meet record, Nick Danner breaks Javelin state meet record.

The Waterville girls cruised to a 7th straight Class B titles, while the Boys win as well to make it a sweep. Kate Hall of Lake Region broke the state meet record in the 100m, 12.12, and added a state all time best in the long jump 18-5 3/4. Bethanie Brown in the 800m, 2:16. Dan Curts of Ellsworth broke the 1600m record, 4:14.02, Nick Danner of Waterville broke the javelin record with a heave of 192-9

The Waterville Purple Panthers have been the gold standard in Class B since moving down from Class A 8 years ago. The girls team added their 7th straight win, while the boys added a 5th title in that same timed framed. This was the 4th time Coach Ian Wilson squad has swept both titles. The wins were a great birthday present for one of the most accomplished coaches in Maine Track & Field history.

The juggernaut known as the Waterville overpowered the rest of the field as they racked up 136 points, while runner Lake Region tallied 64. Of all the states meets contested yesterday this was by far the largest winning margin. How did the they do it?

They started with 18 points in the 100m hurdles as a pair of sophomores Sarah Shoulta & Kellie Bolduc finished 1-2. Shoulta clocked 15.44, with Boulduc running 15.73, the duo were the only ones in the final under 16 seconds. The same duo went 1-3 in the 300m hurdles as Shoulta ran a state leading 46.07 to add her second state title of the day, Bolduc ran a huge personal best of 47.79 for third.

Shoulta added to her individual titles with a third win in the pole vault as she cleared 9-6.

Bolduc added her own individual state title in the triple jump as she leaped out to 36-0 3/4.

Distance ace Bethanie Brown provided her usual high level of racing depsite the high temperatures. The UCONN bound senior won the 1600m in 4:56.34, just off her own state record. She came back in the 800m to break the state record running 2:16.50, the old record was set back in 2001 by Melissa Blackstone of Presque Isle (2:17.83), Brown finished off the distance sweep with in the 3200 clocking 10:36.36, again just off her own state record. The winning margin in the 3200 was 50 seconds.

For good measure Brown, Shoulta, Bolduc & Lydia Roy won the 4x400m in 4:10.19

Sprint and jump star Kate Hall kept her perfect record in state meet races as she added 3 individual titles, plus a relay gold. Hall started off the meet with a state meet record of 12.12 in the 100m dash trials, she would thrash the field in the final finishing with a 12.15, an astounding .66 ahead of the runner-up Alliyah Veilleux of Winslow (11.81)

Hall repeated as champion in the long jump, she broke her own state all-time best by 3/4 of an inch with a leap of 18-5 3/4. The mark also shattered the existing record of 17-8 1/4 set by Gorham's Lisa Kent back in 1982. The winning margin in the long jump was 1-10 3/4.

Back on the track Hall helped her Lake Region squad to nother victory in the 4x100 as the clocked 50.65 to win easily. She concluded her day with with a win in the 200m, Hall ran 25.49 to win by 1 second over Emma Turton of Poland.

Junior Kaitlin Saulter of Hermon broke her own Class B state record of 58.0, as she ran 57.76 for the win, Old Town's Kelsey Maxim also wa sunder 60 seconds, 59.72

Mt Desert Island won the 4x800m relay as they were the only team under 10 minutes, the Trojans ran 9:49.48.

Kayla Gray of Lake Region took the 1600m racewalk, 8:03.52

Old Town's Tia Jackson was the high jump champion clearing 5-0.

Fryeburg's Elizabeth Grzyb won the javelin with a toss of 108-4

Winslow Alliyah Veilleux won the discus 104-10, she was also 3rd in the shot put (33-3), 3rd in the 200m (26.73) & 2nd in the 100m dash (11.81)

Greely's Gwen Sawyer won the shot put 38-10.

Cape Elizabeth's Christina Kouros set state records in the wheelchair 1600m (6:06.19) & 800m (3:06.20)

 

On the boy's side Waterville was paced by seniors Devin Burgess & Nick Danner, and junior Jordhan Levine.

Danner won the shot put with a toss of 47-4 1/2, his winning throw was over 3ft better than second place. In the javelin, Nick's signature event he shattered the state meet record of 179-1 set in 2005 by Leavitt's Ryan Staples, his record-breaking toss was 192-9, the winning margin was an astounding 26-2.

Burgess won the long jump with a personal best 21-7 leap, he was the pole vault runner-up (13-6), added a 3rd in the 300m hurdles (43.71).

Levine won the triple jump with a jump of 41-10 1/2. He also provided a pair runner-up finishes in the 110m hurdles (15.69) & 300m Hurdles (42.84)

Levine & Burgess teamed with Colby Vince & Troy Gurski to win the 4x400m relay, the team clocked 3:33.71

Belfast's Curtis Warren was the upset winner over last year's champion & state leader Devin Burgess, Warren cleared 14-0 for the first time in his life to win the state title. The vault field was especially deep this year as the top 5 all cleared 13-0.

Juniors Dan Curts of Ellsworth & Will Shafer of Gray New Gloucester had one of the best races of the day in the 1600m. Curts would end up winning in a state meet record time of 4:14.02, while Shafer ran 4:16.28, which was also under the old record of 4:16.38 set by Levi Miller of Belfast back in 2005. Curts would add a second win on the day in the 3200m as he ran 9:37.54 to win by 10 seconds over Ben Decker of Yarmouth 9:47.24. Shafer would go on to win the 800m in 1:58.49

Sprinting star Denzel Tomaszewski of Wells didn't set any records, but he did add to his trophy case. The defedning champion in the 100m dash, Tomaszewski ran 11.01 to win the title again, just .01 off the state meet record. He would lead off the winning 4x100m relay, 44.11. Then go on to win his first 200m title in 22.86.

Tom Reid of York was a double winner of the day. Reid a senior won the 110m hurdles in 15.43, he came back later to take the 300m hurdles, 41.30. He would also finish as the state runner-up in the long jump with a personal best 21-0 3/4 & runner-up in the triple jump 41-3 3/4.

Falmouth's Jacob Buhelt led his squad to the state runner-up trophy, Buhelt won the 400m race in 51.0, he would claim 2 runner-up finishes plus a 3rd place. Jacob ran 11.53 for 3rd in th 100m, he ran a leg on the 4x100 that was the runner-up, plus added a 23.34 for 2nd in the 200m.

Ellsworth junior Dan Cox won the discus title with a heave of 144-4.

Elijiah Locke of Gray New Gloucester won the high jump at 5-10, as 4 others cleared the height but Locke won on misses.

Sam Benner of Spruce Mountain dominated the 1600m racewalk, his time was 7:53.33

Ellsworth won the 4x800m relay, the Eagles ran 8:26.99
