Bethanie Brown of Waterville ran in perhaps the most anticipated race of the weekend the 5k. With Erin Finn & defending champion Wesley Frazier in the race the pace was expected to be very fast, and it was. Bethanie covered the first 1k of the race in 3:12.84 which has her in 5th place, the pace continued to be fast as she clipped off laps of 76.77, 77.46, and 77.23 for her next 3 laps. At this point Brown was up to 3rd and starting to ccut the gap to front. The early pace would start to set in but that didn't prevent Brown from going through 3k in a Maine all-time of 9:43.51, breaking the previously held 9:47.64 set by Abbey Leonardi in 2010. At this point in the race Bethanie was on her own, as the leaders had broken away and she had a comfortable lead over the chasers. Brown continued to push through as she hit 4200m in 13:53.79, she would have a little left in tank as she closed it out with a 81.78 to hold off the hard charging pack to finish 3rd overall. This was a gutsy race, one that we have grown to expect out of Bethanie. She pushed hard without concern for the pace, her final time of 16:41.84 shattered her own Maine all-time best of 17:11.14 in last year's meet. Brown now holds every outdoor record from 1600-5k, except the 2 mile, which she'll run tomorrow night. link to Brown's complete splits

Josef Holt-Andrews of Telstar showed he's one of the top Maine distance runners of all-time as he won the unseeded section, and in the process broke Louie Luchini's former Maine all-time best for 5k. Holt-Andrews crossed the line in 14:57.76, the mark bettered Luchini time of 15:00.44 was set back in 1998. Josef ran a smart race as he laid off the fast pace earlier on, but never got to far away from the front. Josef covered the first 1k in 3:01.78, then moved up 7th as the pace increased in the next K as they went through 2k in 5:57. He continued to be near the front as the pace slowed a bit in the next K, going through 3k in 9:03.83 in 3rd place. With 800m to go Josef made his move, and no one could go with him, his last two laps were 68.02 & 64.93 as he pulled away for the win. His time would put him 16th overall in the meet.

In the boys emerging elite Mile, Will Shafer of GNG was 3rd running a personal best 4:18.31. Shafer ran an intellignet race as the pace was hot during lap 1. Will covered the first 400 in 63.35 which had at the back of the 11 man pack. He moved up one spot during lap 2, which he ran in 65.54, passing 800m in 2:08.88. Lap 3 is always the toughest in a mile race as the pace often slows but Shafer would defy the odds, running the fastest 3rd lap of the field with his 65.19. The lap moved him from 10th up to 4th overall heading into the final lap. Will continued to run well over final lap, as he passed 1500m in 4:00.95, and would finish 3rd overall covering his last lap in 64.25.
