How is your fitness as you begin the 2013 season. What excites you most about the coming year of HS XC?

My fitness is definitely at an all-time high now that we are into the XC season. I’m feeling strong, which shows me that the increased mileage and workouts are really paying off. What excites me most about XC is being able to run on all different types of terrain. Unlike in track, some courses are going to be slower and faster than others, so you just have to go with how you feel.

When & how did you get started in cross country?

Since elementary school I played soccer every fall, up until this year. In fact, I hadn’t run more than a mile until I got to high school! I started indoor and outdoor track my freshman year and I was awful (we’re talking 2:30’s for the 800), but I slowly improved over the years. After having a pretty successful indoor and outdoor season last year, I was faced with the difficult decision between varsity soccer and cross country. Ultimately, my love for running got the best of me and I figured I’d give XC a try and so far, I love it!

What are the keys to your successful cross country training program?

The keys for me are to maintain a strong base throughout the entire season, while staying injury-free. So far, this has been working well (knock on wood) and I hope it continues for the rest of the season. I also am a firm believer that you should enjoy your training and have fun with it. Whether it’s a game of Capture the Flag or ultimate Frisbee, my team will find something entertaining to do.

Who are the cross country competitors you most enjoy competing against and why?

Ahh there’s so many great people out there in the running community it’s hard to pick just a few. But for me personally, I love racing against Jack Letellier of Marshwood and any of the Scarborough guys. Whenever we race together, we usually pull each other to some fast times. Plus we have some good laughs along the way. I also raced against Will Shafer this summer in a 5k road race and I’d like to have a rematch!

What are your goals for the 2013 cross country season?

For the XC season as a whole my goals are to: -Remain healthy and enjoy my senior year of running. -Break 16 minutes in the 5k, either on a track or XC course. (I was fortunate enough that after this week, I can cross this one off the list.) -Perform to the best of my ability at the State meet. Obviously winning would be great, but if I run the best that I possibly can I will be content with that. My mentality is to race your heart out and worry about places and time after.

The Fun Run

What music do you rock while working out…

I’m definitely a hip-hop and pop music kind of guy. However, rock and some oldies are fine by me too. Just none of that country music…

Do you like to run in the mud or the grass…

Depends, if I’m going for a fast time, I’d prefer some short-cut grass. But if I’m looking to go puddle smashing and get as dirty as I can, bring on the mud!

Do you hang out on Facebook or Twitter...

Either really. I have a tendancy to go to Facebook, but I’m starting to become fond of Twitter too.

Do you like going out or chilling at home…

As long as I’m not too tired I love going and hanging out with my friends. Once and a while though, I like a day where I can just lay on the couch and do nothing!
