MVC Championship Preview

MVC Championship Preview

Boothbay senior Sophia Thayer won the MVC Preview meet 3 weeks ago in convincing fashion, Thayer covered the 5k at University of Maine at Augusta in 21:27, good for a 27 second victory over Hall-Dale's Emma Wilson. Thayer the defending champion is running as strong as ever as she clocked a personal best 20:00 at FOC.

Sophia is looking forward to the meet, "It is exciting going into a race with the possibility of being a three time champion throughout my four years. I'm definitely nervous to keep the lead, but am ready to run a strong race and be challenged by the competition. I am also hoping that my team comes away with a victory as well!"

If anyone is to challenge Thayer it would be the MVC Preview runner up, Emma Wilson of Hall-Dale who has a best time of 21:17 from the Festival of Champions. A year ago Wilson finished 6th in the meet. Others that should contend for a top 5 finish are Hannah Morley (Boothbay), Gabi Stone (Telstar) & Bree Saulter (Lisbon)

The team competition promises to be tight on the girls side. Lisbon won the MVC Preview meet 3 weeks ago by 11 points over Boothbay. At the Festival of Champions, Boothbay was the top MVC team 42 points better than Monmouth, Lisbon finished 3rd for MVC teams. Last week saw Boothbay edge Lisbon by 2 points at a regular season meet at Lisbon. This looks to be 3 teams all capable of winning on any given day, that will make for an intense meet.

The #21 ranked male xc runner in the country, Josef Holt-Andrews of Telstar is the heavy favorite to repeat as MVC Champion. Most likey Holt-Andrews won't have to push all out to get the victory, the senior last raced 2 weeks ago where he smashed the course record at FOC by 20 seconds, his final time was a personal best 15:07. His time is 1:46 faster than Ben Allen of Winthrop.

Allen finished 3rd in the MVC Championship a year ago as a sophomore is much vastly improved over a year ago, running almost a minute faster at FOC two weeks ago. The race for the spots after Holt-Andrews & Allen should be a good one. Boothbay's duo of Benn Scully & freshman Joey Paolillo along with Lisbon's Nick Harriman. Scully was 7 seconds in front of Harriman at MVC preview meet. At FOC Harriman had the top time 17:24, with Paolilo 17:29, and Scully 17:33

Boothbay is the heavy favorite on the boys side, the Seahawks won the MVC preview meet by 35 points. Monmouth finished 2nd & Winthrop 3rd. Boothbay finished 2nd a year ago. Look for Lisbon, Monmouth & Winthrop to contend for the runner-up finish

Sophia Thayer of Boothbay is the defending MVC Champion, she also won the MVC Preview meet 3 weeks ago by 27 seconds.
