Lisbon girls edge Boothbay by 1 for MVC Title, Boothbay boys cruise
Sophia Thayer & Josef Holt-Andrews repeat as conference individual champions
A pair of defending champions were able to defend their MVC XC titles as Sophia Thayer of Boothbay & Josef Holt-Andrews of Telstar took easy wins on Saturday at the Univeristy of Maine at Augusta.
Thayer covered the 5k course in 21:05, good for a 34 seconds victory over Emma Wilson of Hall-Dale. It marked the 3rd time in Thayer's career that she has been the conference champion, she also had won the MVC preview meet a few weeks prior.
Gabi Stone of Telstar had a strong effort to finish 3rd, her time 21:45 was a 1:15 faster than she ran at the MVC preview meet where she placed 7th. Lisbon's Bree Sautter finished 4th to lead her team, her time was 1:02 faster than she ran at the preview meet. Boothbay's Morgan Crocker rounded out the the top 5.
The race for the team title was a close one between Lisbon & Boothbay. Boothbay had the early lead with the low stick from Thayer, then got a great effort from Crocker in 5th. Lisbon's first girls across was Sautter in 4th, while Kaylin Le finished 7th for the Greyhounds. So after 2 runners for each team the score was Boothaby 6, Lisbon 11. It was figured that the 3-4-5 runners would decide the race, and that was certainly true. Boothbay's Hannah Morley was 9th, while Lisbon went 22nd & 23rd & 25th with Caitlyn Bundy, Arianna White, & Allie Lycette. Boothbay's Kate Friant was the 4th Seahawk across the line in 26th, while Tori Schmid finished 41st to round out the scorers. The end result was a 1 point win for Lisbon, 76-77
Monmouth Academy finished 3rd with 92 points.
Telstar's Josef Holt-Andrews cruised to his 2nd straight MVC title, the senior who is currently ranked #21 in the Milesplit Saucony Elite 50, won the race by 20 seconds. Holt-Andrews wasn't racing all out but using the race more as a tempo run, he helped the rest of the field along to some good times on the tough course.
Winthrop's Ben Allen ran strong throughout as he was the runner-up with a 17:34 effort, the mark was a 21 second improvement from his MVC preview effort on the same course. 10 seconds later Lisbon's Nick Harriman finished to take third place.
Hall-Dale's Chris Pomerleau was also under 18 minutes with his 17:54 clocking, the mark was 30 seconds faster than his previous best on the course.
Rounding out the top 5 was Benn Scully of Boothbay, he was followed by his teammates Joey Paolilo & Robert Campbell
The Seahawks of Boothbay had a dominating team performance as they won the team title with a score 38-67 over runner-up Monmouth Academy. Boothbay had places 5-6-7-11-14 to secure the win.
