Looking Ahead: Class C Girls Top returners 2014
There will be a new individual state champion next fall in Class C girls as 4 time winner Carsyn Koch will have graduated. Let's look at the contenders.
NYA's Hannah Austin is the top returning Class C girl in 2014. Austin was the state runner-up this fall, and ran the fastest 5k, 19:27 of all returners. Hannah had a very consistent fall that saw her finish 1st in the D2 race at WMC's, 2nd in the WM regional, 2nd in the state meet, & 108th in the NE Championship. Austin will enter 2014 as the early favorite.
Freshman Tia Tardy of Mattanawcook had an outstanding first year campaign. She was the 2nd freshman at FOC, was the EM Regional runner-up, 3rd place in the state meet & 198th in the NE Championships. Tardy is the 2nd fastest state meet returner, as well the 3rd fastest 5k returner with her 19:56.
The Orono trio of Lily Koffman, Kassidy Dill & Hannah Steelman are expected to contend for a top 5 spot in 2014. Dill, a freshman is the #3 state meet returner after finishing 5th this fall. Kassidy ran a best 5k time of 20:25 this fall. Additionally she finished 4th in the EM regional, and was 154th in the NE Championship. Koffman had another strong year for the Riots, helping them to the state team title. She was 3rd in the EM regional leading the way, while she finished 7th at the state meet. Lily returns as the #5 state meet returner, and has the second fastest returning 5k time of 19:55. As for Hannah Steelman, she had a great end to her freshman campaign, she placed 6th in the state meet & finished off her year with a personal best 20:27 at the New England Championship.
Orono won the state title in 2013 by 2 points, returns 3 of the top 5 state meet returners giving them three low sticks. Based on 2013 best Orono is the team beat once again in 2014 as they shoot for a repeat. The combination of Koffman, Steelman & Dill wil be at the front of many races next fall.
Waynflete who was 3rd this fall, returns 6 state meet runners from that team. The Flyers are the top returning team based on the state meet results and for those teams that had more than 5 underclassmen.
Monmouth Academy is another team to keep an eye in 2014. Monmouth was 4th in the state meet this fall, and is the #2 returning team based on best 5k times.
George Stevens & Washburn also figure to have strong returning teams in 2014 that hope to contend for a podium finish.
