WMC Indoor Track & Field Championship Meet Preview

The state's best sprinter Kate Hall of Lake Region will be on display and the record books should be put on notice. Hall's coming off an illness last week and will be looking to re-write the record books. The team competition on the girls side is going be very close between Greely, Falmouth & York. While the boys competition should be a good one between York & Falmouth.

 

Girls

Based on seeds the top three teams are seperated by just 8 points. Greely is the front-runner with 122 points, with Falmouth seeded for 119, and York at 114. Should made for a great meet with lots of back and forth action with three teams involved.

The Rangers of Greely are led by distance standout Kirstin Sandreuter who is the top seed in the mile & 2 mile, and will run a leg on the top ranked 4x800 team. Kirstin is coming off a strong regular season that saw her break the league record in the 2 mile twice on the season. Junior division runner Jocelyn Mitiguy is seeded for 21 points, which includes the top seed in the hurdles, third seed in the high jump & 200m. Greely will also need a big day out of sophomore Alysaa Casarez who is the top seed in the junior shot, her 37-3 throw last week is the top throw in the state this winter. She is also tied for the top seed in the pole vault

Falmouth needs a big day out of Charlotte Cutshall, who is the second seed in the long jump & 55m, plus third seed in the 200m. Cutshall currently has the third best jump in Class A this winter, 16-3 1/2. The other athlete for the Yachtsmen who is seeded to score over 10 points is junior division sprinter Emma England. England is seeded for 13 points, she is the top seed in the 200m, and tied for 4th fastest in the 55m, she also will run on the top ranked junior relay for Falmouth which has a chance to break the league record. They enter the meet with a best time of 1:52.94, the league record of 1:52.38 by Greely in 2001.

York has seven athletes who are expected to score 10 plus points the most depth of any of the top contending teams. Leading the way for the Wildcats is Lizzy Wagner is the second seed in the hurdles, the high jump & third seed in the 400m. Distance runner Heather Evans is seeded for 16 points, she is seeded second in both the mile & two mile. Watch for Katherin Bullock, Charlotte Reilley & Sarah Panteleos who are all expected to score in multiple events.

Lake Region's Kate Hall will have the audience captived as she looks to win three more titles, and score the max of thirty individual points. Hall has broken league records this winter in the 55m, 200m & long jump and is currently ranked 5th in the nation in the 55m, plus 3rd best in the long jump.

Yarmouth's Emma Egan is another athlete to watch, the sophomore is seede for 24 points. Egan has the top 55m time in the junior 7.67, plus the best high jump 5-2, she is also the fourth seed in the long jump.

Elora McCuddy of Traip Academy is the top seed in the junior 400m, 62.34, and fourth fastest in the 800m.

 

Boys

Falmouth enters the meet with a 10 point lead based on seeds over defending champion York. Falmouth has a tota of 7 runners who are expected to score 10 or more points.

Leading the way for the Yachtsmen is Tony St. Angelo who is the top seed in the junior high jump & open long jump. His 20-4 1/2 seed has him ranked third in Class A. Fellow sophomore Nigel Dunn, is the top junior 200m runner plus the third best hurdler. Sprinter Noah Martin is another key junior for Falmouth, Martin is the second ranked 55m & 200m and will run a leg on the top ranked junior 4x200m relay team.

The defending champion York will need a big meet from Jordan Pidgeon who is the second best high jumper at 6-0, and also the second ranked triple jumper. Top junior hurdler Matt Arsenault & 400m runner Tucker Corbett are expected to earn ten points as they are the top seeds in there events.

Other athletes to watch are Cape's Deven Roberts, who is top senior hurdler, and second seed in the high jump, he could also score in the long jump. Yarmouth's Travis Hamre is seeded for 14 points, he is seeded second in the senior 200m, and third seed in the 55m.

NYA's Michael McIntosh is the best sprinter in the meet, the junior has the top seed in the 55m 6.75 & 200m 23.47. His times rank him #1 in Class B in both events. Freeport's Harrison Stivers is the second best seed in the 400m, and third fastest in the 200m. Gray New Glocuester's Will Shafer is the top distance runner in the meet, he has the top seed in mile & 2mile. His 4:19.50 in the mile from earlier in the season broke the league record, and currently has him ranked #1 in the state for the event.
