New England High School Track & Field Leaderboard #9

It was certainly a great weekend in New York City at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. Couldn’t have asked for more. Maybe the best meet of all these indoor championships. Three days of non-stop action and I’m still recovering. There were 33 leader board updates, three New England records and two Massachusetts records.  Additionally there were several Connecticut, Maine and Rhode Island state records. A note of thanks to Jim Spier, the Maestro of this three-ring circus. He continues to present the sport the way we should be seeing it. And to Dave Mitchell, Stephanie Dueringer-Truscott and the announcing crew, who kept everyone highly informed and generated as much excitement for each race as I have ever seen.

This is the final Indoor Leader Board. Below is a brief recap of the top New England performers and performances. See you outdoors. -Larry

B-60m: You don’t hear much from Evan Lexo because he’s the private school kid. He bettered his New England leading 60-meter time running 7.00 in the Emerging Elite division to finish fourth in the final. He finishes the year ranked No.1 New England. Lexo was also clocked at 6.52 en-route at 55m.

B-200m: The senior from Brien McMahon in Norwalk, Ct. moved to No.1 New England this year with his 22.18 clocking. Shnyden Pierre finished 18th in the prelims and bettered Kent Grisamer’s (E.O. Smith, Storrs, CT) previous New England leading mark of 22.69.

B-400: Hingham’s Andrew Bolze makes his case for the top New England male performer at the New Balance Nationals. With a New England and Mass. Record in the long jump (see below) and a No.4 all-time New England indoor mark in the 400, Bolze was certainly at the top of his game. He came out of the 400 prelims with a New England leading 48.09 clocking, qualifying with the second-best performance behind the leading qualifying time of 47.68. Bolze’s time came after a nearly 2-hour exhausting long jump competition earlier in the day. Bolze’s performance in the prelims puts him No.7 all-time New England and No.4 all-time on the Mass. List behind Olympian Calvin Davis, Dorchester (47.62), Eric Crichlow, Lexington (47.9) and Michael Greene, BC High, Dorchester (48.0+). Bolze was hoping to get under 48 seconds in the final, but there was too much jockeying for position in the race. And while Bolze was in the seeded heat, he had to chop his steps and back off one too many times during the race to solidify his No.2 seed. His time in the finals was 48.63, finishing sixth, good for the No.6 all-time Mass. indoor performance.

B-800: Randy Neish, the sophomore from Glastonbury, Conn., finished 15th in the Championship final with a 1:54.59 clocking. That time put him outside the top-10 all-time New England list, but probably somewhere between 15 and 20. He finishes the season ranked New England No.1 at 800 meters.

B-1500/Mile: Another of the private school elites, Garrett O’Toole clocked an en-route 3:56.05 for the 1500 meters during his third-place finish in the championship mile. His mile time of 4:13.60 was just shy of his New England leading 4:12.91 set earlier in the season. He finishes the season as the No.1 New England ranked miler.

B-2Mile: Paul Hogan was the big surprise here, not only because of his second-place finish, but because he became only the sixth New England schoolboy to dip under nine minutes indoors. The UMass Lowell bound senior from Burlington, Mass., clocked 8:59.82, just shy of the winning performance of 8:59.61. Hogan’s 3000 split of 8:28.60 is No.3 all-time New England and No.2 Mass.

8:49.60 – Franklyn Sanchez (Lynn Technical, MA)        1999
8:50.29 – Andy Powell (Oliver Ames, North Easton, MA)        1999
8:57.4 – Alberto Salazar (Wayland, MA)                1976
8:58.84 – Jonathon Riley (Brookline, MA)            1997
8:59.6 – Arthur Dulong (Randolph, MA)                1966
8:59.82 – Paul Hogan (Burlington, MA)                2014

B-5000 Meters: If you can believe this, no New Englander’s had run 5000 indoors this year before this race. Colin Tierney (Bishop Hendricken) ran 15:04.15 to place 10th in the final. He moves into the No.7 spot all-time New England. The six runners ahead of him have all run sub-15. Tierney previously led the New England leader board at 1500 with his 4:03.50 clocking, since broken

B-60mH: Tyrik Henry from Enfield, Conn., was second in the EE 60mH finals. He ran 8.22 in qualifying and then 8.08 in the finals. That time puts him into the No.9 spot on the all-time New England Indoor list, which is headed by Myles Bradley (Norwich Free Academy) at 7.88.

B-High Jump: It took only one-quarter of an inch for Jermaine Lascelles to take the New England lead in the high jump. The Bloomfield Conn. Senior cleared 6-08 ¼ on his third attempt to grab second place in the high jump championship. Both Nicholas Lombardo (Darien, Conn.) and Alex McCord (Veterans, Warwick, RI) were the previous New England leaders at 6-08.

B-Long Jump: Andrew Bolze was at his absolute best here.  The Harvard-bound senior from Hingham took third in the competition, and in the process broke the nine-year old New England record, not once but twice. Sitting in fourth place entering his fourth attempt, Bolze jumped a New England record 24-3. That moved him into the #3 spot and broke the previous New England mark of 24-2 ¼, set by Myles Bradley (Norwich Free Academy, Ct.) in 2005. It also wiped out the old year-old Mass. Record of 23-10 by Alex Niemiec of Chicopee Comprehensive. His only miss came on his fifth attempt when he fouled. Leaving his best for last, Bolze then improved upon his record with a leap of 24-03 ¾ on his final jump. Bolze now becomes the fifth long leaper in New England history to go over 24-feet indoors, and the only one from Mass.

24-03 ¾ - Andrew Bolze (Hingham, MA)                2014
24-02 ¼     - Myles Bradley (Free Academy, Norwich, CT)        2005
24-01 ¾ - Ron Content (Manchester Central, NH)        1982
24-01    - Josh Fournier (Bacon Academy, Colchester, CT)        2001
24-01    - Innocent Jacob (Chariho, Wood River Junction, RI)    2011

B-25# Weight: Adam Kelly (Barrington, RI) captured the weight with a toss of 77-09 1/4 on his second attempt. That distance was off his New England and US leading mark of 79-01 ¼ set earlier in the season. Kelly has three of the top five marks in the US this year.

B-Mile Walk: The event should have more of a role in HS completion than it does. If you know HS track in Maine, then you know Maine has produced several Olympians in the heel-toe event. Enter Spencer Dunn, the slightly-built sophomore form Edward Little HS in Auburn. He improved his New England leading walk mark with a solid fifth-place finish in 7:17.63. Spencer is also the New England leader in the 5000 meter walk at 14:47.20.

B-4 x 55m SHR: New England states are all over the turf with this event, sometimes running three or four hurdles, or even highs or lows. No uniformity across the six-state region. For record purposes the 4 x 55mH with five hurdles will do just fine. Classical HS of Providence, RI comes away as the New England leader in this event with a ninth-place finish in 31.70, and in the process setting a Rhode State record.

B-4x800: Burlington High (with Paul Hogan on the anchor) came ever so close to the Mass. Record. Burlington ran 7:53.20, just off the Bay State record of 7:53.11 set by the team from Hingham last year at this meeting. Burlington is now No. 2 all-time Mass. Indoors.

New England All-Time Indoors:
7:50.25 – Chariho (Wood River Junction, RI)        2012
7:50.11 – Hingham, MA                    2013
7:53.20 – Burlington, MA                2014
7:53.50 – Deering (Portland, ME)            2003
7:53.5 – Rindge & Latin (Cambridge, MA)        1984

B-4 x 1-Mile: The relay race of the weekend with no less than three teams breaking the National Indoor record of 17:20.20, set by Chariho, Wood River Junction, RI in 2012. Ridgefield, Conn. was fifth, finishing in 17:37.15, good for #4 all-time on the all-time New England indoor list. Only New England teams under 18 minutes listed below

New England All-Time Indoors:
17:20.20 – Chariho (Wood River Junction, RI)        2012
17:28.47 – Danbury, CT                    2008
17:33.70 – Glastonbury, CT                2007

17:48.66 – Bishop Hendricken (Warwick, RI)        2006
17:48.99 – Amity Regional (Woodbridge, CT)        2009

B-Pentathlon: Newton North’s Nick Fofana took the New England lead for 2014 with his fourth place finish in the Pentathlon. Fofana scored a total of 3,338 points, just 44 points from third place. Fofana’s events scores:

60mH – 6.36
LJ – 21-04 ¾
SP – 47-03
HJ – 6-04 ¼
100m – 2:52.39

G-55m/60m: Kate Hall, the senior from Lake Region HS in Naples, Maine got a PR and became the = No.3 all-time New England performer at 55 meters with her 7.00 en-route clocking in the semi-finals of the 60 meter dash. From start to finish this season Hall has been the leading New England performer at 55 meters and the long jump (see below). Her 60 meter semi-final time of 7.53q puts her in the top-10 all-time New England. She finished ninth in the final, 7.62, and had an en-route clocking of 7.07 for 55 meters.

G-200 Meters: Although she didn’t make the finals of the 200, Sierra Irvin did top out as New England No.1 with her 24.58 clocking in the 200 prelims, good for 10th overall. The Hingham, Mass. junior is now No.3 New England Indoors all-time and No.2 Mass.

New England All-Time Indoors
24.54 – Quashira McIntosh (Hope, Providence, RI)        2013
24.57 – Tasha Downing (Technical, Boston, Ma)            1988
24.58 – Sierra Irvin (Hingham, MA)                2014

G-400 Meters: Just like Andrew Bolze, her summer training partner from Hingham HS, Sierra Irvin also made the finals of the 400. She qualified seventh at 56.18, making her the No. 6 Mass. all-time indoor performer at 400 meters. Irvin then came storming back in the final posting an outstanding 55.29 performance, good for 5th place in the two-section final. Irvin was the winner of the first section. Her finals performance moves her to No.5 all-time Mass. indoors.

G-1500/Mile: Danae Rivers certainly turned some heads as she finished fourth in a loaded mile field. The sophomore from Wilbur Cross in New Haven, Conn. finished fourth in 4:48.59 to give her the New England lead in the mile. Her 1500 en-route split of 4:27.10 also made her New England No.1 at the metric mile.

G-3000/2-Mile: What an outstanding 2-mile race amongst the top girls here. Give all the credit here to Hannah Debalsi, the sophomore from Staples HS, Westport, Conn. who led just about from the opening until she faltered on the last lap. She was in a position to grab second when she got tripped up 40 meters from the finish and went down. Give her credit though as she righted herself and eventually finished fourth in 10:17.36. Her time was a bit slower than the 10:12.95 she ran earlier in the season. She now owns the second and fourth fast times all-time New England indoors for 2-miles. Her 3000 meter split of 9:31.10 also gives her the New England lead at that distance, and put her in the top-20 nationally all-time.

New England All-Time Indoors
10:10.5 – Lynn Jennings (Bromfield School, Harvard, MA)    1978
10:12.95 – Hannah Debalsi (Westport, Staples, CT)        2014

10:19.0 – Lesley Welch (Veterans Memorial, Peabody, MA)    1981

G-5000 Meters: In this National record setting race the senior, Claire Howlett from Westhill HS in Stamford, Conn. hung tough to finish third in 16:58.35, the No. 5 performance all-time New England. It was the second fastest time run by a Connecticut schoolgirl and puts Howlett as New England No.1 for the season.
New England All-Time Indoors
16:40.65 – Julie McConville (Hingham, MA)            2013
16:45.84 – Cassie Hintz (Old Town, Maine)            2005
16:51.88 – Lindsay Crevoisart (Glastonbury, CT)            2010
16:52.48 – Cathy Schiro (Dover, NH)                1983
16:58.35 – Claire Howlett (Westhill, Stamford, CT)        2014

G-55m/60m Hurdles: Running in the Emerging Elite division, Chenoa Sebastian clocked a New England seasonal best of 9.04 to finish in 12th place. Behind her in 14th was Isabella DiMare from Notre Dame Academy, Hingham, Mass., who finished in 9.06, the top Mass. performer this indoor season.

G-High Jump: She began the season as the US No.1 back in December, and it was where she ended the season here in March. Ellen DiPietro, the Marshfield, Mass. senior, upped her career best to 5-10 ½ in winning the high jump buy two and one-half inches. She now ranks = No.2 New England all-time behind record holder Heather Francis (Dartmouth, MA) 5-11 and Kyle Emery (Swampscott, MA) 5-10 ½. On the all-time New England list, eight girls have jumped 5-10 or better.

G-Long Jump: Like DiPietro in the high jump, Kate Hall got her New England leading mark of 19-11 back in December. She was runner-up here with a seasonal and career best of 19-11 ½. Just an outstanding effort by the junior from Maine. She remains No.3 all-time New England indoors, and once again breaks her Maine State record. Hall also had additional top-20 New England marks of 19-5 ½, 19-2 ½ and 19-0. Hall was very consistent and had only one foul on her 4th attempt.

G-Triple Jump: Mackenzie Gray is from Andover, Mass., but attends the Governor’s Academy in Byfield, Mass. So she is not jumping every weekend  She has owned the triple jump from season’s start and finished off this weekend with a solid 38-03 ½ effort to take 14th place. She currently ranks No.6 all-time Mass. indoors. Gray is one of the 11 New England girls to have jumped over 38 feet.

Massachusetts All-time Indoors
42-05 ¼ - Carla Forbes (Newton North, Newtonville, MA)        2012
40-11 ¾ - Arantxa King (Medford, MA)                    2007
40-10 ¼- Elena Zhelevov (Needham, MA)                1991
38-09 – Tammy Peeples (Weston, MA)                    1992

38-03 ½ - Mackenzie Gray (Governor’s Academy, Byfield, MA)        2014

G-Mile Walk: Make no mistake that Maegan Allen is already a force to be reckoned with on the national stage. The sophomore, home-schooled walker from Arlington, Mass., placed third in 7:28.16 to take the New England lead in this event.  Allen’s time was a Mass. indoor record, breaking her previous best of 7:46 set back in February.

G 4x55m SHR: Andover, Mass. wasted little time here as they destroyed the New England and Mass. record. The Warrior’s finished seventh overall in 33.53. That time bettered the previous New England and Mass. record of 34.20 set by Newton North in 2011. The Andover team included Lizzie Kobelski, Hannah Chapman, Jillian Gamache and Courtney Comeau, the coach’s daughter.

G-Sprint Medley Relay: Wilbur Cross, New Haven, Conn., was second in the long-sprint medley, finishing in 4:02.68. That time earned them the New England No.1 ranking for the season. Their team included Chaslynn Saucier and Gabby Curtis 52.78, Shea Connors 60.20 and Danae Rivers 2:09.70.

G-Distance Medley Relay: Outstanding race amongst the top three teams. Staples, Westport, Conn., ended up third with a New England record of 11:45.79. Staples was anchored by Hannah Debalsi who ran 4:46 for her 1600 meter split, the fastest anchor in the field. The staples team consisted of Erica Hefnawy 3:41.00, Olivia Wiener 62.55, Tyler Scanlin 2:16.08 and Hannah Debalsi 4:46.16. Their time betters the previous New England record of 11:51.47 by Lincoln-Sudbury, Mass. from 2011.

G-4 x 1-Mile: Hopkinton Mass. was the leading New England team here placing 14th overall in 21:38.99. Their time is No.7 all-time for a Mass. team. Lowell Mass. was 20th in 21:57.46.

G-Pentathlon: Marshfield Mass. senior Kelsey Sullivan took home a sixth-place finish in the pentathlon with a point total of 3328 for the No.1 New Englander. Emma Checkovich (Hampton, NH) who previously sat atop the New England Leader Board, finished 12th with a point total of 2840. Sullivan is now ranked No.3 indoors all-time Mass.
