Day 3 Recap

USM's Jamie Rugniski continued to show that the bigger the meet the better he performs as the sophomore won his first national outdoor track and field championship this afternoon in the triple jump. Rugniski who won the title indoor, came into the meet seeded third in the meet, and hadn't competed in the triple jump in a competition for several weeks. He wouldn't let that hold him back as he was fourth heading into the finals as he jumped 48-5 on his second attempt. On his 5th jump of the day was the big one as Jamie got out to 15.13m or 49-7 3/4. The mark was a personal best outdoors and broke his own USM school record of 48-5 1/4 set at the beginning of the year. With his win, Rugnsiki is the first National Champion in school history outdoors, and on the year has earned 4 all-american awards making him the most decorated track athlete in school history

In the 800m, Mitchell Black a sophomore from Tufts showed he learned from his nationals experience indoors where he set the pace for the first 400m. In the final today Black set himself at the back of the pack coming through in 27.8 for the first 200m. At about 250m Black started his move to the outside and came through the 400m in 57.4 in 5th place. With 250m to go Black started his big move as he was up to 2nd with 200m to go.  It was a great finishing 150m from Black and Bowdoin Collge's Jacob Ellis as the two tried to catch eventual winner Andrew Carey of John Hopkins, they battled all the way to line covering the last 200m in 26 seconds. Black would hold on for thr runner-up in 1:51.01, with Ellis finishing 3rd in 1:51.31. Black improved one place from the indoor meet, one thing remains for the talented runner from Brunswick, a national title.
