South Portland Girls & Scarborough Boys best in SMAA Cumberland County Meet

The championship season got its start off with the counties meet in the SMAA today as the teams from Cumberland County meet at Scarborough HS. The conditions were favorable for one of the first times all year long as the weather helped produce some excellent jumps, throws and times.

On the boys side Scarborough ran the state #2 time in the 4x800 with their 8:27.38 effort which was highlighted by a sub 2 split from senior Alex Karam. South Portland who finished 2nd added the 6th fastest time in the state with a 8:40.65.

Drew York of Gorham dominated the 1600m racewalk, coming up just shy of breaking the 7 minute barrier as the junior clocked a perosnal best 7:01.75, the mark is the fastest in the state this spring.

Travis Grant of Gorham jumped a huge personal best in winning the long jump, 20-7, the mark ties him for 5th best in state. He edged out South Portland senior Ben Michaud who jumped a personal best of 20-6 1/4, which ranks 6th in the state.

The 400m saw Cheverus sprinter Jake Dixon break 50 seconds for the second consecutive week, the junior stopped the clock at 49.99, the mark is the 2nd fastest in the state.

 

In the the 300m hurdles Cheverus standout hurdler Isaac Yeboah become the first one under 40 seconds  this season with his 39.96 clocking. Also in the race Travis Grant of Gorham ran 41.21 the 4th fastest time in the state. Scarborough Cam Langlois was strong as well running 42.24 good for the 5th fastest time in the state.

Michael Cuesta of South Portland won the triple jump with a leap of 43-3 1/2, the mark is the second best in the state. Freshman Ruay Bol also of South Portland was second, and had a huge jump of 41-6, the 8th best overall in the state and just ahead of teammate Ben Michaud who jumped 41-4, the 9th best in the state.

Nick White of Cheverus won the discus with a 152-11 effort.

Cheverus ended the meet with a state leading 4x400 that clocked 3:30.94.

 

On the girls side the action on the track got underway with a very good 4x800 despite only three teams competing in it, At the end it was Cheverus who pulled away with anchor Georgia Caso to run 10:07.13, that time is the fastest in the state. In second place was South Portland 10:11.40 who held off Scarborough 10:11.67, those times rank #2 & #3 in the state.

The 1600m was another featured race on the day. South Portland standout Shannon Conley led throughout on her way to a 5:15.84 clocking, that time is 3rd fastest in the state. Scarborough sophomore Laura Volan had a big breakthrough as she clocked 5:21.19, which moved her up to 5th fastest in the state. Right behind her was Kiera Murray who ran 5:22.30 the 6th fastest time in the state.

Laura Turner of Gorham broke 8 minutes in the 1600m racewalk with her 7:56.09 which moves her up to state #2.

South Portland won the 4x100 in 52.41 which moves them up to 5th in the state. The Red Riots also were the best on the 4x400m, they ran a 4:16.25 which puts them #2 in the state.

Olivia Smith of McAuley threw a state leading 124-6 in the discus, she won all three throwing events on the day.
