Cheverus the golden boys program of the 80's and 90's last won a state title in 1998, and after 3 runner-up finishing in the last 4 years finally broke through to the top spot at Windham on Saturday. The Stags who entered the meet as the favorites showed why on the track and in the field as they would win both sprint relays, the discus, 400m, & a 1-2 sweep in both hurdle races.

The Cheverus 4x100 (Luke Trickey, Jake Dixon, Elijah Yeboah & Isaac Yeboah) set a new state all-time best & state meet record with a blazing 43.32, the mark took .03 off Edward Litttle's 7 year old record. Dixon also won the 400m in a personal best time of 48.93, becoming of the few sprinters in Maine to break 49, he would come back to finish second in the 200m in a photo finish with Lewiston's Isaiah Harris, the margin of victory was 22.750 to 22.759, a mere .009 of second. He would also anchor the 4x400 to victory with a 49.1 leg, as the Stags ran 3:25.96.

The Yeboahs brothers have been a part of the near misses and the seniors took it upon themseleves to ensure Cheverus would raise the trophy this year. The duo scored 36 individual points as they swept the 110m & 300m hurdle races. Isaac would win both timed in personal bests each time 15.08 & 39.52 respectively, Elijah was right behind with his personal bests 15.12 & 39.81. Both ran on the winning relays as well.

In the field Nick White won the discus with a toss of 155-2, he also was 4th in the shot put.

The standout athlete of the day was Lewiston's Isaiah Harris who won the 800m in a new Class A state meet record, & won the 200m in a photo finish. Harris also provided some excellent relay legs, he split 46.8 in the 4x400m to lead his team to a second place victory to secure the state runner-up plaque. He also split 1:52 in 4x800, but the team was DQ'd for a violation. In the 800m, Harris broke his own year old record of 1:54.14 when he crossed the line in 1:52.96. The mark is the second fastest 800m ever run by a Maine high school boy, just outside of the 1:52.80 run by Greely's Mark McCauley. Harris will have a shot to break that mark at next weekend's New England Championship. His most exciting run of the day was the final leg of the 4x400m, where he almost made up the gap on a strong Cheverus team.

The surprise of the day came in the shot put where South Portland sophomore Dan Guilani who entered the meet with a best of 48-3. Guilani would qualify for the finals with a 46ft effort, in the finals his first attempt was a huge 55ft throw but it was a foul, that throw had the spectators buzzing. In his next attempt, he threw a bomb 53-6 to take over the lead, that mark was over a 5ft personal best. For good measure, Guiliani would throw 53-1 on his final attempt putting a stamp on his victory.

Another surprise came in the long jump where Brunswick's Shane Lyons entered the meet as the 15th seed with a best of 19-7, the sophomore certainly didn't pay attention to his seed as he got out to 21-0 1/2 to take the victory.

Scarborough won the 4x800 relay in a state leading 8:10.62, while Kennebunk's Austin Weigle jumped 6-4 to win the high jump, his mark equals the best in the state this spring.

28 points in the long jump propelled Thornton Academy to Class A state title as the Trojans edged Bonny Eagle 65-58. Thornton was impressive in the long jump as they finished 1,2,3,4. Leading the way was Tori Daigle who jumped a best of 17-8 1/2, senior Amanda Arnold was the runner-up, 16-3 1/4, with Anna Mehlinger (16-2 1/2) & Alexandra Pettaway (16-0) finishing 3rd & 4th respectively. The win gave TA both the indoor & outdoor title in 2014

Daigle not only won the long jump but finished a strong second in the 100m hurdles & ran a leg on the 5th place 4x100m relay. The trojans got a big time performance from shot putter Kaeleigh Harrison, who entered the meet as the 7th seed (33-10 1/4), Harrison returned to the form that saw her finish second in last year's state meet as she won her first individual state title with a throw of 36-8 1/2. In the discus Harrison was seeded 7th and improved to 5th provided key points.

Bonny Eagle put itself into position to win the meet as they trailed TA by 7 points going into the 4x400m relay, the Scots would go on the win the final section, and their time placed them second overall in the event worth 8 points. This would have given Bonny Eagle a 1 point victory, then the dreaded "Bonny Eagle coach to the scorer's table" announcement came over the loudspeaker. The ruling was an illegal use of the fly zone on leg 2, and just like that 8 points were gone, and so was the state title.

The Scots had a strong day on the track though despite the end result. They opened the meet with an empahtic win in the 4x800, where they ran a state leading 9:36. Audrey Weyand the senior sprint star who suffered a hamstring injury indoors, showed no ill effects as she would win a great 400m race over Amanda Knight of Messalonskee, Weyand ran 57.69 to Knight's 57.91. In the 200m it was another great race with Weyand holding on to win over Synclaire Tasker 26.70 to 26.74.

Distance star Kialeigh Marston had a strong day as well, Marston anchored the winning 4x800, then cruised to the state title in the 1600m (5:07.8) followed up by another win in the 800m (2:19.39)

Brewer's Synclaire Tasker scored 38 individual points the most of any athlete, what many might not know is that she went to the prom on Friday night. Tasker certainly didn't let the prom get in the way as she added 3 individual wins (100HH, 300IH, & Triple jump) plus a runner-up (200m). In the 100m hurdles Tasker clocked 15.35, in the 300m hurdles she came up just short of the state meet record, but did end up with a state leading 45.47, the time was a personal best by over a second.  In the triple jump, she added another personal best & state leading effort of 37-3 1/4 for her 3rd win of the day. Tasker came up just short of four wins, as she was edged 26.70 to 26.74 in the 200m.

Edward Little won the 4x400m out of section 2 running a state leading 4:08.87, while Lewiston took the 4x100m in state leading time of 50.52.
