Things got under way today for several of the top teams in Western Class A and B at Community Park in Falmouth. The boys race saw Michael Aboud beat the field covering the 2 mile course in 11:05, just ahead of Bryce Murdick of Falmouth (11:10). The Massabesic senior was in control for most of the race as he and a pack of Falmouth boys came through the first mile in 5:34. From there he took care of the rest slowly pulling away for the victory.
It was Falmouth however who came away with the team victory taking spots 2-6 with those 5 runners covering a 14 second spread. Jorma Kurry gave his team praise for their efforts saying “Take everything with a grain of salt but I thought we looked good today. Our top group ran well and I was glad to see some of them up their with Aboud who is tough.”
Falmouth scored 20 points in their win followed by Massabesic’s 53, York’s 63, and Marshwoods 113. Also impressed with his teams showing was Mark Crepeau of Massabesic . When asked he said “very pleased with the boys. Our top group of Mikey, Andrew and Remy looked good. Donavan Drew ran well for us as did Alex Sweat who is a freshman and was #5. Lost our 4-5 from last year so we are rebuilding a little bit but its gone well.”
On the girls side Falmouth opened with a statement, as they took the win in an early season battle of two of Class A’s best.
Maddy Doyle ran “an aggressive and poised race” according to coach Matt Sanzone who spoke highly of his runner after her winning effort. The senior ran 13:31 and held of a strong challenge from Vishva Nalamalapu of Falmouth who was the runner up in 13:32.
Falmouth came away with the team win taking 5 of the top 9 spots on their home course and scoring 28 points while Massabesic and Marshwood scored 43 and 62 respectively.
“Girls looked good and the top group ran a strong second half which is great…sometimes we struggle with that early on” Said Coach Kurry of Falmouth. “Gabby Farrell and Paige Chamberlin ran great races for us today as our 4-5 runners.”
Mark Crepeau was pleased the effort from his girls squad saying “Gabby and Maquila ran well for us today. Everyone figured out their pacing in the second half and our pack has to tighten up a bit. Overall I am very pleased.” This matchup may return later on in the season with these teams being ranked #1 and #2 in the early preseason Class A rankings.
