SMAA: Deering-McAuley-Westbrook

Deering,Westbrook & McAuley got the early meet this week but that didn't prevent some solid performances throughout the meet.

Halee Phelps of Westbrook was a double winner as she ran the SMAA leading 1:35.07  in the 600yd, then followed it up with a win in the 2 mile with the 3rd fastest time in the state 12:08.74. The two wins earned her senior division athlete of the week

In the junior division it was Westbrook sophomore Courtney Arsenault who scored a pair of wins, winning the 55m in 7.91 then ripping a 28.19 to take the 200m.

On the boys side junior Paulo DeMarco had a strong day as he set a personal best 8.15 to easily win the hurdles, his time is the state #2 performance. He followed that up with a fine 53.33 win in the 400m before added a third win in the 200m, where he clocked 24.23. With his three wins, the senior division performer of the meet was an easy choice.

SMAA: Bonny Eagle-Marshwood-Portland-South Portland

Marshwood sophomore Natalie Dubois won the junior 200m in league leading time, her 27.84 also is the second fastest in the state this winter. She added a 7.96 for second in the 55m which earned her the junior division performer of the meet

Bonny Eagle's Kyaunna Libby ran the state leading time in the 800m, as she notched a personal best 2:22.62. She was selected as the senior division performer of the meet.

Juliana Selser of South Portland opened some eyes as she won the mile over defending Class A champion Kialeigh Marston of Bonny Eagle. Sesler's winning effort was 5:29.57, she also came back to run 28.15 in the 200m, showing she is going to be one to watch this winter.

On the boys side, Michael Cuesta of South Portland broke his own league record in the senior triple jump as the senior jumped a state best 43-5 3/4, he also added a 7.14 winning effort in the 55m dash. 

Shot putter Daniel Guiliani heaved it out to 52-2 the best throw in the state today to easily secure the win.

Ben Steeves of Bonny Eagle earned the junior division performer of the meet as he won the 55 hurdles in 9.04, ran a league leading 2:08.59 in the junior 800m, then added a third win in the junior triple jump with a distance of 35-4 1/2.

Freshman distance standout Anna Slager of Gorham ran the fastest 2 mile in the state as she cruised to an easy win with her 11:51.47 effort that saw her finish the last 200m in close to 34 seconds! She previously earned to win in a close 600 yard race that saw her pull out the win 1:36.87 50 1:36.98. She was selected a the junior division performer of the week.

Cheverus got a big day out of Sarah Mount who won the 55m hurdles in 9.89, plus added a win in the 200m, 28.44, as well as a strong 15-8 effort in the long jump which was good for a second place finish.

Maddie Stella of Noble had a huge 36-11 1/4 to extend her state leading mark, her big throw earned her the senior division athlete of the week.

Jake Dixon of Cheverus ran the 200m for the first time this season as he clocked a state leading 23.28, and then anchored the Stags to a state leading 1:35.65

Sanford's Peyton Weigand had a excellent day as he jumped a new state leading distance of 20-7 in the long jump, he also sprinted his way to a 6.77 effort in the 55m which is the second fastest time in Class A. 

Jacob Schott of Cheverus had a strong day jumping as the senior won the triple jump 40-7 3/4, was runner-up in the high jump with a 6-0 clearance, and jumped 19-5 in the long.

Cheverus thrower Nick White won the shot with a heave of 51-1 1/4, the mark is the second furthest in the state this winter.

Sophomore Sam Rusak of Scarborough broke the SMAA league record in the pole vault as he set a new personal best 14-5 to win the event, his mark is the 4th best indoor mark in state history in the event. Additionally his mark ranks him 17th nationally in the event, and tops for the class of 2017. Rusak also added wins in the junior long jump (18-10), junior high jump (5-0), & qualified for the state meet in the 55m hurdles (8.95).

Biddeford's Justin Gagnon had a strong day as he broke the 8 second barrier with his 7.98 winning effort in the 55m hurdles. He would add a 42-4 triple jump win, the mark is the second best in the state. He was selected as the senior division performer of the meet

In the mile, Jacob Terry of Scarborough ran 4:36.98 to set the state lead as he won by close to 9 seconds. While the Red Storm's Colin Jones set the league standard in the 600yd with his 1:18.83 effort

In one of the best races of the day, Tyler Lebel of TA lead the senior 800m for the first 400m before relinquishing it Jacob Bloom of Scarborough who would hold it until the last 90 meters when Lebel kicked home hard to run 2:03.85, his winning time is the second best in the state. Bloom was rewarded with a new personal best 2:04.59 which has him 4th fastest in the state.

Thornton's Tori Daigle broke her one week old senior long jump record as she added over 5 inches with her record breaking effort of 17-9 3/4. She also won the 55m hurdles in 9.39

Laura Volan of Scarborough ran 12:00.25 for 2 miles good for 3rd fastest time in the state.

Scarborough's Ellen Shaw ran 9.39 the first time over the qualifying hurdle height that time places her 3rd in Class A, she also won the junior high jump with a 5-1 clearance.
