State Champion spotlight: Tori Daigle Thornton Academy

What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

My preparations leading up to the state meet involved, practice everyday of the week including our events (hurdles, jumping) and a workout. Also trying to fit in working out with my trainer once a week and cross training with soccer twice a week.

How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?

It's definitely hard to deal with all the pressure that is put on me for the big meets. As you can see, I fouled 4 out of the 6 jumps in long jump so I was more than nervous and felt the pressure which is not usually like me. My emotions were a roller coaster from the beginning of the day to the end. l mostly just try to not let the nerves get to me and think about something else.

You were down to your last attempt in the long jump with two fouls, what was going through your mind when you stepped onto the runway for you third attempt? What was your reaction after getting a legal jump and having it be a state meet record?

After fouling two jumps in the long jump, all I could think about was not making it to the finals and not being able move on. I was a nervous wreck going into my third jump but my coach Carl Smith calmed me down and said he wasn't worried and that I could do this. When I finally hit the board, It didn't even matter what I jumped, I was just happy that I could advance. (But yes, I was happy about my record too)

You also won the triple jump with a personal best, what's it been like adding a new event this winter and being able to do so well in it?

I thought I would add triple jump onto my events because I figured why not, it can't hurt. I am used to long jump now and triple jump is a lot like long jump, in the ending phase. My coaches thought it would be a good idea to try it out and so I did and saw results.

Coming into the season what were your goals and did you achieve them?

My goals were to reach 18 again in long jump at least once in the season which I achieved, my hurdle goal was to keep improving on my form, speed and time and I did achieve that but still had my best time as a junior and I did not have a goal in triple at first because I was brand new to it. After I figured out that I could be a competitor in it, my goal was to do my best and compete or at least stay equal with the people who have been doing it for years and I did achieve that goal.

How does it feel to win 3 individual state titles and lead your team to a repeat state title?

It feels awesome to know that I helped my team gain points In all three events that I did at states. I definitely couldn't have done it without their help and support. Hopefully we can win another state title outdoors!
