State Champion spotlight: Izzy Evans Greely

Freshman Izzy Evans proved to be one of the best distance runners in the state this winter as she went on the win the Class B mile state championship as she was able to kick for the win over the last 400m. We caught up with Izzy to ask a few questions about her preparation before the meet, her mindset on meet day, what her plans are for the spring.

What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

My preparations for the state meet did not differ much from my preparations for a regular meet. We had a speed workout Thursday, recovery run Friday, and I did a pre-meet run on Sunday with one of my teammates. Since the state meet was on a Monday that did allow for a great amount of sleep and rest prior to race day.

How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?

To deal with the pressure and nerves of the state meet I tried to think of it as just another regular season meet against some new teams and individuals. I'm not too big on visualization, but I did find that helped with my nerves going into this meet.

What was your reaction when Caroline Driscoll made her move with a lap and half to go? When you took the lead what were you thinking, did you think anyone else would challenge you on the last lap?

Going into the state meet my coach and I had created two race plans. At about the 800m mark I changed from plan A to plan B and took the lead knowing that the race was only just beginning. At the time I didn't know where the rest of the field was, but I knew that Caroline Driscoll was on my shoulder waiting to make her move. As I had expected, in the last two laps Driscoll challenged me a couple of times. The first challenge occurred at two laps to go and the second was 100m after that. The first challenge did catch me by surprised, but the second challenge I was expecting.

Coming into the season what were your goals and did you achieve them?

Coming into this season I didn't have many goals since I originally wasn't planning on running. Instead I was planning on training all winter for my spring sport and running here and there. But after attending the Bowdoin Relays as a spectator it made me realize how much I missed the team and running and training for races. So the next day I joined the team and began practicing. After joining, my goal for the season was to run each race to the best of my ability and to learn from my mistakes so that I could improve. As a team, our goal was to qualify for New Englands in our 4x800m, so that also became one of my goals.

How do you think winning an individual state title will effect you heading into outdoors?

Currently I do not plan on running outdoor this spring because my other sport takes place then. However if I were going to, I'd say that my individual title would provide me with a bit of a confidence boost, but outdoor is a whole new ballgame. You've got some new athletes joining teams, some others leaving them, and everyone else who is ready to run some new PRs.
