State Champion spotlight: Emma Egan Yarmouth

State Champion spotlight: Emma Egan Yarmouth

Junior Emma Egan captured the Class B high jump with a state meet record breaking effort of 5-4 1/2. We caught up with Emma to ask a few questions about her preparation before the meet, her mindset on meet day, and what her reaction was when she cleared the record

What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

I mostly tried to stay away from jumping the week before, since I didn't want over jump and be too tired for the meet. I did quite a bit of plyometrics and form drills that week and stayed away from doing to much strenuous activity. Although I was disappointed to not be able to jump, I've learned that rest is a necessary evil.

How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?

To be brutally honest I didn't. I tend to be fairly anxious before big meets, but luckily I have some amazing teammates who distract me from the stress and keep me calm. I also do a lot of dancing before I jump just to shake off the stress.

You won the high jump with a new state meet record, once you had the win in hand did you plan to take a shot at the record? What was your reaction when you cleared it?

When I found out I had won I had just finished the 55 meter dash finals and was unaware of what had happened. I had planned to up to 5'4 and then 5'4.5, but when I came back I knew. I felt like it was one of those cheesy "mighty ducks" moments, but I knew in that second that I could do it, so I took a leap of faith (literally and figuratively) and then bam! It happened.

Coming into the season what were your goals and did you achieve them?

My goal coming in to this season was to prepare for outdoor track. I hadn't really set any goals for indoor, all I knew was that I was going to high jump. I hadn't expected this season to go so amazingly and I am incredibly thrilled with the results. I almost feel like all of my hard work in years past and now has finally payed off, and with the state title I feel like I achieved way more than I was hoping for.

How do you think winning an individual state title will effect you heading into outdoors?

Honestly I don't think it will affect me too much, as this was a bit of a shock to me. Every year I'm wowed by the strong competition I have, and I am not the kind of person to shy away from that state title or not. Overall, I think that my competition will keep me humble through the season, and I look forward to competing with some old friends from indoor.
