A clean sweep for Thornton Academy

Results

The Thornton Academy girls showed both quality and depth as they rolled to another SMAA Southwesterns outdoor track & field title. The Trojans were paced by freshman Alex Hart who won the 100, 200 & 400m events. They also got a pair of wins from Tori Daigle in the long & triple jumps. In the throwing events they tallied 34 more points, including a win in the discus from Victoria Lux.

The freshman Hart had the crowd in awe as she put on a show. Starting with the 100m dash where she won her prelim race in 12.65, she return to win the final in 12.71 into a slight head wind. In the 400m she was more impressive clocking a 58.20, a new personal best and improving on her on state leading mark. She would finish off her day in the 200m as she battled Lauren Magnuson of South Portland before pulling away coming off the turn, clocking a new Class A leading 25.72, and #2 effort in the state. Alex also added a third place finish in the long jump where she leaped 15-11.

Senior Tori Daigle won both the long & triple jump, she set a new conference record with a leap of 18-0.5, the jump broke the 4 year old record of Maria Curit (17-10.25). Daigle would take the triple jump with a winning leap of 36-1 3/4.

Thornton showed its strength in the throws with a 2-3 finish in the shot put. Samantha Curran once again stepped it up in the championship meets as she threw a season best 37-6, Victoria Lux the Class A leader threw 37-0 for third. Lux got back on the winning track is the discus as she launched it out to 116-0, that effort moved her up to Class A #2. Elizabeth Provencher also threw a new personal best of 100-6 to place while Curran was an inch behind her in 100-5 to place 4th.

Gorham freshman Anna Slager swept the 1600m & 3200m races. Slager used a blistering kick over the final 400m to clock a winning time of 5:25.57. In the 3200m, despite the heat Slager controlled the race from the front and ran alone for most of the race, she stopped the clock at 11:55.06.

Noble's Nina Tasker clocked a state leading 15.15 in the girls 100m hurdles race as she dominated the field. Teammate Maddy Stella won the shot put with a throw of 38-1 1/2, the throw is #2 in Class A this spring, and in the process she defeated the #1 seed.

In one of the best races of the day Cheverus's Sarah Mount battled Callie O'Brien on South Portland right to the line in the 300m hurdles, Mount's winning time was a new personal best of 48.07, just .02 ahead of O'brien.

Scarborough opened the meet with a Class A leading effort in the 4x800 as the Red Storm clocked an a strong 10:07.80.

An interesting note, on the track freshman won every event from the 100m-3200m, with the exception of 300m hurdles.

The Thornton Academy boys won 3 individual events, plus 2 relays, as they won the team title amassing 86 to outdistance runner-up Scarborough by 18 points.

Senior Derek Boissonnault won the 100m in a personal best 11.22, he also ran a key leg on the victorious 4x100m relay which clocked a state leading 44.43 as he came from behind to beat Cheverus at the line.

Another senior Dylan Smith broke the 23 second barrier with his 22.99 victory in the 200m, Smith was also on the winning 4x100 & 4x400m relays, and provided a fourth place in the long jump.

The 800m race was won by senior Tyler Lebel who used his kick to hold off the field in the last 100m, he stopped the clock at 2:03.04

Ian Marshall provided by points with his runner-up finish in the 1600m racewalk with his 7:35.91.

South Portland junior Daniel Guiliani broke Ed Bogdanovich's meet record of 59-2 set way back in 1977 with his winning effort of 65-5 1/4. He would also win the discus on his last throw as he got out to a best of 163-6 to avenge his loss to defending Class A champion Nick White at last week's county meet.

In the pole vault Sanford junior Peter Hegarty broke the meet record of 13-3 1/4 set back in 1996 by another Sanford athlete, Ben Murray.

South Portland senior Michael Cuesta won the long & triple jumps. In the long jump it came down to his final attempt, and he was able to leap a state leading 22-5, just missing the meet record of 22-5 1/2. In the triple the top ranked Class A jumper got out to 44-9 1/2 to take the competition.

Biddeford's Justin Gagnon won the 110m hurdles in the race of the day as he clocked a personal best and state leading 14.60 to edge Scarborough junior Griffin Madden by .02. Gagnon was also the runner-up in the long jump with a personal best 22-1 1/4 & placed third in the triple with a 43-3 1/2 distance.

Scarborough opened the meet with a state leading 8:12.37 effort to win the 4x800m relay.

Massabesic's Michael Aboud battled high tempartures and Deering's Iid Sheikh-Yusef to pull away on the final lap to win the 3200m in a personal best and Class A #4 performance, 9:52.86

Portland's Jonathan Bobe won the 400m in a personal best 50.96.
