Midnight: Time for champions to get to work
The Scarborough girls carried on tradition kicking off the XC season with a midnight practice at Scarborough HS. This is the 5th year that the team has started things off with a midnight practice. Last year the Red Storm peaked at the right time as the won the Class A state title, with the entire top 7 back this fall they won't be sneaking up on anyone, but have the talent & drive to repeat.
The girls came equipped to practice with headlamps to help navigate around the sidewalks and roads of the Scarborough complex of schools. They also added in plenty of ab work and pushups, before a team stretch to conclude the first practice of the season.
We talked with head coach Ron Kelly who is entering his 43rd year as coach of Scarborough about the prospects of this year's squad. "If we stay healthy, we'll be as good as anyone", the veteran coach said about the 2015 team. "Should have a good battle for the 5th spot this fall, with 4-5 girls with a good shot to claim it."
We spoke to a few of team members about midnight practice and about being defending state champions. See our interviews below
Captain/senior Laura Volan placed 14th at the Class A state meet last fall, she what see had to say about midnight practice, and coming back the team favorites.
We also spoke to the fastest returner from last year's championship squad, sophomore Bethany Sholl about the upcoming season.
