In her own words: Hannah Steelman excited about new teammate

Hey everyone!

These past couple of weeks have been super eventful. Preseason came to a close, school started back up, and Orono cross country received some exciting news; A new member would be added to our team.

Running with Tia these past couple of weeks has been an absolute joy. She is a great competitor, teammate, and friend, and her passion for running is contagious. I am so glad she was able to come to Orono and be apart of our school and team, because we've already had so much fun with her.

Within these past couple weeks, we've also had our first two cross country meets.

The Ellsworth Invitational. Dang, that course is a tough one, especially in the heat. And I swear, that day in Ellsworth is the hottest every year (that's probably how it got its nickname, "Hellsworth"). The Ellsworth course is well-known for its huge hill that is so special, you get to run up not only once, but twice! Despite the hot weather and the difficult double-loop, it was a very successful meet for my team and I. Our girls JV team all ran really well for the first meet of the season, our boys JV team won the meet, as well as our boys varsity, and our girls varsity team came in 2nd to a very talented GSA squad.

One week following Ellsworth, came Bucksport. I've always enjoyed this course. It's fairly flat and it is usually pretty warm when we race there, but luckily, there is more shade than sun on this course. This past Saturday, our team competed very well there with our JV girls placing 3rd overall, and JV boys, varsity boys, and varsity girls winning the meet. Every member of the team ran exceptionally well, and we're gearing up for the meets to come.

One thing that I have consumed a lot of throughout these past couple of weeks is WATER. Water, water, water. It is so important, in this heat especially, to keep yourself well-hydrated by drinking a good amount of water every day. Even just taking small sips from the water fountain at school every time you pass it is better than nothing. During and after school, I carry my water bottle with me everywhere I go to make sure I'm drinking and staying hydrated throughout the day. This is something important to do everyday, not just on meet days. Yes, you will probably drink more water on meet days than you do in two days combined, but even on days when you only have practice, it is important to hydrate yourself. Sipping water constantly throughout pre-meet days is an especially essential thing to do because you're prepping yourself and your body for the race coming up the following day. So, in short, drink your water!!

I hope all of your first couple of meets went well for you, and I also hope you're as excited as I am for all the meets in the future. This season is truly going to be a good one, and the best is yet to come! Stay motivated (and hydrated ;)).
