Tardy and Hassett establish new course records @PVCs

Mattanawcook Academy hosted the 2015 PVC Championships. The weather was not ideal, but that did not stop the hundreds of spectators that attended. 23 schools were represented at the event.

Tia Tardy of Orono High School had the fastest time of the day for the girls overall. Tia broke her own course record lowering the mark of 20:12 to 18:42. GSA's John Hassett had the fastest boy's time of the day for the boys finishing the 3 mile course in 16:14. The old record was 17:08. Both Tardy and Hassett have the fastest 5k and 3 mile times in Class C this season.


PVC Large School results

The girls from MDI won the team title (59 points) placing runners 3,7,13,17,19. Caribou was a close 2nd with 65 points followed by Presque Isle with 74.

MDI Coach Desiree Sirois met with each of her girls individually in the days leading up to this race. Her pep talk seems to have worked well for the team.

Amanda Boyd of John Bapst was the top runner with a time of 20:16.2 Mandy Graham of Presque Isle and Emma Strong of MDI battled all the way to the finish line finishing in 20:33.2 and 20:33.4. Freshman Audree O'Meara of Old Town finished 4th followed closely by Jen Clawson of Foxcroft Academy.


Girls Large School Top 10 Individuals




The Caribou boys dominated scoring just 20 points and placing all 5 runners in the top 8 to win the title. The Caribou boys finished 1,2,3,6 and 8. Old Town finished 2nd with 79 points edging out MDI with 80.

The top 8 runners all finished the course in under 18 minutes. Chathu Karunasiri of Caribou continued his win streak finishing first again in 17:00.9. Teammates Evan Desmond and Tsion Macleod challenged each other to the line finishing in 17:13.1 and 17:13.9. Jason Bartley of Presque Isle was just behind finishing in 17:14.9. MDI's Peter Philbrook finished 5th in 17:43.

PVC Small School results

The girls from Orono placed their top 5 within the top 8 finishers to win the team title. Orono finished 1,2,3,7 and 8. GSA finished with 35 points by placing runners 4,5,6,9 and 11. Host Mattanawcook Academy finished 3rd with 78 points and finishing as a group 12,15,16,17,18 and 19.

Tia Tardy, Hannah Steelman and Kassidy Dill of Orono ran together at a set pace for the race. Tardy finished first with the fastest time of the day overall in 18:42. Hannah Steelman finishing 2nd in 18:54 and Kassidy Dill 3rd in 19:07. GSA placed the next 3 spots. Eliza Broughton (19:53), Zeya Lorio (20:11) and Mary Richardson in 20:17.

Girls Small School Top 10 Individuals



The Orono High School boys won the Small School title with 24 points placing runners 2,3,4,7 and 8. GSA finished a strong 2nd with 32 points placing runners 1,5,6,9 and 11. Lee Academy finished 3rd with 98.

John Hassett of GSA had the fastest time of the day overall of 16:14.2 setting the course record. His goal was to run sub 16, but the muddy conditions and an issue with his spikes slowed his pace. Matt Keresey of Orono was second (17:12) and Houlton's Isaiah Brown was 3rd (17:16). William O'Neil and Tristan Butterfield of Orono rounded out the top 5.
