Northern Maine Class B Regional XC Preview

Individuals

Waterville's Lauren Brown is the individual favorite to win the Class B Northern Maine title, she is coming off a dominating performance last Saturday at KVAC as she won the overall title in 19:52. Her winning margin was 31 seconds, and her time was the third fastest in meet history on the Cony course.

With a much faster course this week, Brown will look to break the 19 minute barrier, a mark she narrowly missed at FOC when she finished 6th with a 19:00.65 performance. If Brown wins she would become the second one in the family to capture a Regional title as sister Bethanie won in 2011 & 2012.

Brown's road to the title became a little easier as Camden Hill's standout freshman Augusta Stockman who clocked 19:03.57 earlier this season at FOC is out for the rest of the season with a stress fracture.

Amanda Boyd of John Bapst will look to challenge, Boyd won the PVC Large school title last weekend covering the 3 mile course in 20:16. Boyd has run much faster this fall including a 19:25.95 effort at FOC that placed her 14th, that mark is the 3rd fastest in the regional this fall. A year ago Amanda placed 4th at this meet before placing 18th at the state meet.

Watch for Cecilia Morin of Waterville to be in the mix as well, Morin was the KVAC B runner-up last weekend, and ran 19:34.30 on the same course at FOC. Morin's time at KVACs was 1:28 faster than a year ago so expect another sub 20 performance on Saturday.

Mandy Graham of Presque Isle & Emma Strong of MDI are two others that will contend for a top 5 finish. Graham edged Strong 20:33.24 to 20:33.49 at PVCs as they finished 2nd & 3rd in the Large school race. Graham has the faster 5k time of 20:31.71 compared to 21:02.70 from Strong.

Teams

The team competition should be a good one KVAC B Champion Waterville will match up against PVC Large School champion Mt Desert Island. Caribou will be another team capable of winning it all, they finished just 6 points back of the Trojans last weekend.

The Panthers beat all the other teams in the region at Festival of Champions, and are the favorites to win the Regional title. Mt Desert Island could be dangerous though as they had their best performance of the fall as they won the PVC title. They got by a good Caribou team which had beaten them at FOC.

Camden Hills would have been in the mix but without Augusta Stockman, they were just 5th at KVACs but should be in the competition for a trip to the state meet.

Presque Isle & Old Town are two other teams that should advance to states. Presque Isle was 6 points better than the Coyotes at PVCs.
