Southern Maine Class B Regional XC Preview

Katherine Lagget-Barr is the defending champ regional champion and looks to defend her title. Barr has battled plantar fasciitis all year and finally recovered from it in the past two weeks. Even though she's been battling an injury, she still won almost every meet. Last year, she coasted to a 19:46 at this meet, She'll try to replicate those results again. Barr set the course record last week at St. Joes going 19:19, she was 25 seconds ahead of teammate, Carolyn Todd. Todd has been running close to Barr and really pushing her when she was hurt. Todd was 20:44 earlier this year on her home course. She has filled the missing shoes of Izzy Evens for the team and has had no problems with it. Watch as she leads the chase pack. Speaking of the chase pack, Yarmouth's combo of Abbey Hamilton and Anneka Murrin will try to chase down Todd and Barr. They went 3rd and 4th last week at WMCs with times of 19:50 and 20:07 as Hamilton leading Murrin. Hamilton has had quite the breakout season. She has a PR of 19:18 from running at Manchester where she beat Barr. She had the fastest 5k in the state for the first couple of weeks of the season. Murrin will push Hamilton like she did last week. Murrin was Yarmouth's front runner last year at this meet as she finished 3rd with a 20:23. Every race this year she's been behind Hamilton in second. It gives their team a strong 1, 2, punch. Another duo to watch is

from Fryeburg, Anna Lastra and Emily Carty. They were separated by 7 seconds last week going 20:26 and 20:33 to finish 6th and 7th at St Joe's. Lastra showed she can run with Todd at NYA two weeks ago where she was only 2 seconds behind her with a PR of 19:17. Her teammate Carty has been spread out with times ranging from 21:10 down to 19:28. She has a seasonal average of 20:10 seeding her to be the 6th fastest girl for this meet. Cape's Liv Palma will look to make another top 5 appearance. She ran smart at St. Joes and moved up well, where she was able to able pass the Fryeburg duo and finish 5th with a 20:24. If she runs like she did at St. Joes and doesn't crank out the first mile, she'll be able to move up with ease. Last year she was 8th going 20:38, she can go low 20's at Twin Brook. Earlier in the season she ran a 21:04 to place 3rd at Twin Brook. Kathryn Miller from York will attempt to break into the top 10. She was 13th last year and has shown that she can run with some of the best from the WMC. She finished 8th with a 20:40. She ran with Fryeburg's Lastra and Carty for most of the race and she's also ran with Palma earlier this year too. Miller has been in the 20:40's for the past couple of weeks and even going 19:12 for 3 miles at Traip. Watch as she'll be in the mix of the chase pack.

Greely comes into this race as the defending champs. In the overall results, Greely finished as the runner-ups in the WMC as they lost 88-90 over Yarmouth. The deciding factor for that race was where their #5 runners were and Greely had the stronger #5, however Yarmouth rested their #5 & #6 last week. Greely does have the advantage running on their home course, they also have the killer 1,2 punch in the front. Yarmouth got a big boost from junior Georgia Giese, who came over from the field hockey team in September. She ran her first race two weeks ago at Sacopee where she ran a 21:11. Last week she was 21:25 and finished 16th. With Yarmouth's #5 runner back in the lineup they'll be looking to give the Rangers another strong race. Looking to be in the mix is Cape Elizabeth. They could threaten if their #4 and #5 runners run with confidence. Both of them are freshmen, and they've showed earlier this year that Cape is a team to beat when they have the right mindset.
