Orono girls goes 1-2-3, George Stevens takes boys title in Class C
Interviews: Orono 1-2-3 | John Hassett | Tucker Pierce
George Stevens junior John Hassett let the field set the early pace, and then made his move just before the 2 mile to bust open the race
"No one really pushed the pace early on, so I decided to sit back, and see how they would react." Hassett said of his race plan
Hassett was confident to run with the pack that included southern regional Nicolas Harriman of Lisbon, Jacob Hickey of Winthrop & Tucker Pierce of Merriconeag
"I was feeling really good right before the two mile, so I just took off." Hassett said of his decisive move
Hassett would pull away from the field easily, as he crossed the finish line in 16:46.18, the only runner in the field to run under 17 minutes. His winning margin was 27 seconds over Pierce.
Pierce rebounded from a 8th place effort at the regional meet the previous week.
"I felt world's better than last week." Pierce commented after the race.
Nick Harriman of Lisbon battled to a third place finish, with Winthrop junior Jacob Hickey next.
Rounding out the top 5 was Lisbon's Jordan Cole, who used his big kick to nip Tristan Butterfield of Oorno at the line, Cole's time was 17:37.75 to 17:37.81 for Butterfield.
The team battle was a good one between Northern Maine foes Orono & George Stevens Academy. Orono came in the slight favorite after winning the regional title by 3 over GSA.
George Stevens Academy turned the tables on the Red Riots at Twin Brook as they pulled out an 11 point win behind the win from Hassett.
GSA got a great run from junior Ollie Dillon who placed 7th, while senior Will Entwisle nabbed a 9th place finish. Another pair of seniors rounded out the scoring with Aylen Wolf (24th) & Devlin Valle (26th)
