Falmouth Girls & Scarborough Boys rise to the top of Class A
The Falmouth girls won the school's first Class A State Outdoor Track & Field title as they tallied 75 to claim the top spot by 13 points over runner-up Lewiston. Cheverus was third with 60 with Bonny Eagle in fourth with 53, & indoor champion Edward Little rounding of the top 5 with 50 points.
Leading the way for the Yachtsmen was junior standout Adelaide Cooke won won the shot put with a new state leading 39-11 1/2 effort, and then added 10 more points with a personal best 131-0 in the discus. Cooke was also the runner-up in the javelin, and fourth in the 100m hurdles as she scored 32 points.
Freshman mid-distance ace Malaika Pasch ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x800m relay team, then came back to nab second place in the 800 before adding a key leg of Falmouth's third place 4x400m.
Senior jumper Lydia Farmer added 6 points with a third place finish in the long jump with her 16-9 effort, she was fourth in the triple jump to add 4 more points.
Cheverus junior Emily Turner had a memorable meet, as the she swept the sprints winning the 100m (12.70), 400m (56.57) & 200m (25.93). Her winning time in the 400m set a new Maine all-time best, and new state meet record. The 400m was one of the best races of the meet as Turner had to come from behind in the final meters to nip Elisabeth Redwood of Bonny Eagle at the line, Redwood was also under the old record. The scene repeated itself in the 200m, but this time it was even closer as Turner won in a lean over Redwood, 25.92 to 25.93. She wasn't done as she completed her perfect day anchoring the 4x400m to the win in 4:09.51.
Rihan Smallwood of Bangor set a state leading height in winning the pole vault of 10-6, she also won the indoor title in February.
Maddy Price of Skowhegan won the triple jump with one of the best jumps in state history as she leaped 37-3 1/2.
Repeat Champions
Sophomore Juliana Selser of South Portland controlled the 800m from the front early, and then used her superior speed to blast away from the field as she won by more than three seconds, her winning effort was 2:20.48. Her time was faster than her winning effort of 2:21.11 a year ago.
Nina Tasker of Noble repeated as 100m hurdle champion as the sophomore won a close battle with Jenny Martin of Lewiston. Tasker's winning time was 15.44.
In the long jump Adela Kalilwa won her second title in a row as she set the state meet record of 18-3 3/4. Kalilwa continued her big meet with a runner-up finish in the triple jump. Kalilwa also ran a leg on the victorious 4x100m relay.
Also repeating as champion was Kayla Allen of Lewiston in the 1600m racewalk, Allen dominated the field as she clocked 7:27.15, her winning margin was almost 46 seconds.
Edward Little's Britanee Nouchanthavong won her second javelin title in a row with a personal best 129-0 effort, that was just 1 inch shy of the state meet record. The distance is third best in state history.
On the boys side the Red Storm of Scarborough scored 84.5 points to win the title, their second Class A title with the other coming in 2013. Scarborough completed the "triple crown" with the win, as they captured state titles in cross-country in the fall, and indoor track this winter. The last Class A boys team to accomplish the feat was Cheverus back in 1988-89. Falmouth was the runner-up with 55 points as they got a point in the final relay to break the tie with South Portland. Messalonskee had a strong day finishing fourth with 51.5 & Brewer rounded out the top five teams with 48.5.
Scarborough was paced by junior Sam Rusak who did something that hadn't happen since 1979 when he won four individual events. Rusak started his day with a state leading 15.01 to capture the 110m hurdles, he then won his speciality the pole vault with another state leading effort of 15-6. Next up was the high jump where he was the only one to clear 6-0 with no misses. Sam finished out his day with a come from behind victory in the 200m as he set another personal best with his 22.82 winning time.
The Red Storm also got a huge effort from senior Colin Tardiff who kicked his way to a second place finish in the 3200m as he ran a personal best 4:23.36, he doubled back to finish second in the 3200m as well with another personal best 9:36.20. Tardiff's second place finish matched what he did as a freshman, the last time Scarborough won the team title. He also ran a leg on the runner-up 4x800m relay.
Senior Andrew Sholl added 8 points in the 800m as he was the runner-up in a personal best 1:59.19.
The discus competition was a back and forth affair between Austin Lufkin of Brewer & Daniel Guiliani of South Portland, Lufkin led with two throws to go before Guiliani took the lead, but Lufkin answered. On his final throw Guiliani took the lead back with a 164-8 but that lead was short lived as Lufkin took it with a personal best 168-4.
Lewiston senior Osman Doorow put up a pair wins as he took the 1600m in 4:22.16, and then came back to run 9:33.67 in the 3200m.
South Portland's Ruay Bol jumped 45-1 to win the triple jump & was the runner-up in the long jump with a 21-4 leap. In the long jump Brewer's Erick Seekins regained his top form from indoors as he leaped 21-5 1/4 for the victory.
Owen Concaugh of Messalonskee set a new state leading time in the 800m as he stopped the clock at 1:58.36, winning his first individual state title.
Marshwood closed the meet out with a state leading 3:29.28 to win the 4x400m relay. Falmouth won the 4x100m relay as they clocked a state leading 44.09 for the title.
Senior Keenan Welzel ran 50.19 to take the 400m race, the time was a new personal best.
Repeat Champions
Daniel Guiliani repeated his Class A Shot Put title with a new state meet record of 67-3 1/4, his winning margin was over 11ft.
Cole Butler of Edward Little added his third straight state title in javelin with his 169-8 effort. Butler won the Class A title as a sophomore, then last year took the Class C title when competed for Limestone/MMSM.
Paolo DeMarco of Deering ran under 40 seconds to win the 300m hurdles title, his 39.86 better his winning time from a year ago.
Messalonskee ran a state leading 7:58.40 to open the action on the track as they repeated as 4x800 champions.
Record Breakers
There were three Class A State meet record set on the day. In the boys shot put Daniel Guiliani of South Portland broke his own year old record with his 67-3 1/4 effort, that bettered his 62-8 1/4 throw from last year. On the girls side, Emily Turner of Cheverus won an exciting 400m with a time of 56.57, which bettered Alex Hart's year old record of 56.87. In the long jump it was Lewiston senior Adela Kalilwa who jumped a record breaking 18-3 3/4 to better the 27 year old record of Angela Chrichton of Brunswick.
