Future Stars: Aiden Willey (Bonny Eagle HS)

Aiden Willey of Bonny Eagle placed 2nd overall at the Festival of Champions in the freshman race, he was the top Maine finisher. His time of 17:08.61 is the second fastest time for the Class of 2020 this fall.


How long have you been running and how did you get started?

I've been running since about kindergarten. At my elementary school we had a program that for every mile we ran, we got a plastic little foot thing. A majority of our class had a competition to see who can get the most feet and knowing me, I am very competitive, so I tried getting the most feet I could possibly get.Then, I got hooked on to running.


Do you remember your first real race?

Unfortunately, I don't remember my first race, but I do know it was a mile. I was seventh with a time of 8:50.


How did summer training go?

My summer training was great. I ran on my own during the beginning of the summer about 4-6 miles everyday to increase my distance for high school and for the 10k's I had coming up. I also ran at Green Mountain running camp during the end of my summer to learn new techniques to use in my high school career.


You gave started off HS career with some top finishes, did you expect to have that kind of success already?

I didn't expect to start my high school season with some top finishes because I knew that there were great runners I would be running against that had very fast times.


What has been the biggest adjustment going from middle school to high school running?

The biggest adjustment from middle school to high school would be the mileage and the tempo that you are running at those miles.


What is your favorite workout?

My favorite workout would probably be mile repeats.


What are your goals for the rest of the cross country season?

 My goal is to break 17:00 and to place top 30 in class A's state meet.


What do you love most about running?

What I love about running is that it makes me feel alive.


Do you have a favorite quote?

What is your favorite food?

My favorite food has to be peanut butter on a bagel.


Do you have any pre-race rituals or routines?

 I don't really have a pre-race ritual.The only thing I like to do is eat many carbs and get a lot of rest for the meet coming up.


What brand of shoes do you train/race in?

I train in Nike Pegasus 33 and race in Saucony Vendetta's


What was the last movie you saw and what did you think of it?

The last movie I saw was Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. I thought the movie was jammed packed with action and is great for those action lovers.


What is something most people don't know about you? 

 Something most people don't know about me is that I'm a yoga enthusiast.


What was your favorite Olympic moment in Rio? 

My favorite Olympic moment was when Galen Rupp came 3rd in the marathon, when it was just his second marathon ever.


Lastly, if you were stranded on an island with three things what would they be?

The three items would probably be split shorts, chocolate milk, and a fishing pole.
