"I'm proud of my preservence" those were the words from Class C Southern Maine Regional Champion Faith Blethen of Boothbay after her race.
"I've always had this feeling that maybe I haven't been gut checked before and I feel like I hit it today."
The sophomore repeated as regional champion but it wasn't as easy like most of her wins this fall.
"Skillings and Hammerton put me on my toes."
Blethen took the race out hard from the gun opening up an eight second gap at the 800m mark over Olivia Skillins of Maine coast Waldorf.
By 2 miles Blethen's lead was done to 3-4 seconds with Skillings closing the gap. Behind them a trio of St. Dom's runners led by Alexandra Hammerton was within striking distance with a mile to go.
In the final mile Hammerton & Skillings actually went by Blethen but she had that gut check moment to fight back over the last half mile to secure the victory.
Her winning time was 21:11.80.
Hammerton who didn't wear spikes managed to navigate the course without issue as she outleaned Skillings for second place 21:14.41 to 21:14.42
Ellie Chidsey of Waynflete put in a strong effort for fourth place, while Caroline Castonguay of St Dom's rounded out the top 5.
There was no question as to who the team champion was as St Dom's placed 4 runners in the top 7 to win with 31 points. Waynflete was the runner-up with 60.
For St Dom's Hammerton (2nd) & Castonguay (5th) lead up front but a pair of senior Sydney Sirois & Ella Brown ran very well for (6th) & (7th). Megan D'alessandro rounded out the scoring with a 16th place finish,
