Marita Stressenger Weekly Athlete Fall XC Blog #4

Yesterday was one of the most eventful meets this season. We won with 18 points and everyone had great races. Our average time was 19:55.60, which was a big improvement from last year’s 20:36 from WMC’s. Emily broke Egan’s course record of 19:20 (I think that’s what it was.) with a super impressive time of 19:09. I came in after her in 19:19, coming in just 3 seconds before Espy. After Espy came Doss, Barton, Tierney, and Nichols in 20:13, 20:15, 20:42, and 20:50, respectively. Rounding out our first seven was Kozlowski with 21:20, in 9th place. Espy and Morris were the only two to break our top seven up, which was pretty cool. Pomeroy in 13th, Rand in 15th, and Gregory, who PR’d by over 2 minutes and came in 30th, all had impressive races too. On the boys’ side, Cape won with 33 points, led by Rand and then Flathers. It was a great meet across the board.

Of course, good times were not the only eventful things of the meet; a lot of other amusing things happened. First of all, when we all went trekking in the woods before (there’s only one porta potty), we got those Velcro ball things all over us, which were really annoying. But luckily we were wearing sweats so they didn’t get on our uniforms. Then we went to the line and did a new cheer: “1-2-3- Team! Together Everyone Achieves More!” That was pretty funny. Then when we finally started the race, half of us false started so they had to do it again, which Emily and I started laughing about a minute in to the race. The best part of the whole race though, was after the first mile when we were coming out of the woods. It sounded like there was a lot of commotion in the field, but I just figured they were spectators. However, to our surprise (and theirs too), it turned out it was the boys team coming into the woods to cool down! We all collided and it was really funny. We probably would have laughed if we weren’t so tired. Then, after the race, Emily and I were cooling down and I saw a weird thing in the grass. I didn’t know what it was at first and it kind of looked like a porcupine so I was said, “Oh my god Emily, Look” and pointed at it. She darted off into the woods (I think she ran faster than most people’s kicks) freaking out. Of course, then the weird-looking thing (that Emily somehow thought was “a dead body”) turned out to be a stuffed animal that somebody had dropped.

The race felt good, despite some really tough hills, and the conditions were great. Emily, Adele, and I ran together for about the first half and then Emily broke it open. The first mile was our fastest, like usual, but it definitely wasn’t too fast because it felt pretty steady. It was nice to have some of those down hills to get momentum, and they were kind of fun too because it felt like we were flying. That was our first hilly course we had run on in a while so it was cool to have that added challenge. Yay!

Training was great this week and everyone’s been doing really well. After our run this morning we had a waffle party at Marisa’s house (they we amazing.) and watched you-tube videos (prefect way to start the weekend.). Next Saturday we are running in Ocean State Invitational at Rhode Island, which we’re super pumped for. It’s a really pretty course and there’s going to be some great competition from all over. Boys and girls combined, we will be entered in four races (boys JV race, boys championship race, girls JV race, and girls championship race.). There’s a really good shot for our JV team to win (they won last year and Pomeroy won individually.) and for us to be really competitive in the championship race. Yay! Oh yeah, and we leave at 10:00AM on Friday so we get to miss school which, of course, is amazing.
