Scarborough Boys/Girls Prevail in matchup of top teams in SMAA

The duo of Nate Hathaway & Craig Robinson (Scarborough, both pictured on the left) led the Scarborough Red Storm to a victory over rival Cheverus & Massabesic, in a SMAA regular matchup at Cheverus High School. Hathaway & Robinson established a quick pace right from the beginning, coming hrough the mile together in 5:06. The second pack was about 10-15 seconds back, including Jack Terwilliger (Cheverus), Tim Woods (Cheverus), Sam Chick (Scarborough), Brad Nakanishi (Scarborough) & Ben Morrison (Massabesic). The fast pace took it's toll on several runners as they ended up going out a little faster than normal.

Up front Hathaway & Robinson traded off the lead as the toured Payson Park during the 2nd mile, which they reached in around 10:30. The second pack broke up a bit but still had three guys battling eachother. Chick & Terwilliger each had there turns at the front, with Morrison right on there heels. Just off the back of the pack #2, was Tim Woods with Peter Lepage (Massabesic) trying to make up the difference. Behind them there was a bigger pack led by Zach Brown (Scarborough), who had a breakthrough race to help the Red Storm secure a victory.

The race was decided just before the runners hit the track for the final 800, as Hathaway surged ahead and went on to a course record breaking win, covering the 3 mile course in 16:11 (old record was Taylor Dundas 16:31), Robinson followed in 16:17 also under the old record. The battle for 3rd-5th was also decided as the runners hit the track, Terwilliger surged ahead to capture 3rd in 16:49, a hard charging Chick was 4th in 16:53, while Morrison grabbed a top 5 finish with a 16:58.

(Fiona Hendry leads Hannah Pierce)

In a story that has been repeated all fall, a freshman Fiona Hendry (Cheverus) won a race and set a new course record. Hendry toured the course at Cheverus High School in 18:43, to set a new course record formerly held by freshman Emily Durgin, who set it at the pre-season Jack Wilkinson Invitational (19:09) Hendry was joined by Massabesic's Hannah Pierce at the front of the pack. Hendry started seperating herself from the field just before the mile mark, where she cruised to a 6:05. Pierce followed with Amelia Lundkvist (Cheverus) within striking distance. The Red Storm packed it up after that with Melissa Dellatore, Whitney Chamberlain & Abby Chick holding down 4-6th spot. Behind them Sarah Dugas (Scarborough) & Abby Nobert (Cheverus) had a good back and forth battle going on.

As they toured Payson Park, Hendry extended her lead on the downhill portion, as her leg turnover was spectacular. She came through two miles in 12:20, Pierce was holding strong in 2nd, with Lundvkist still working her way closer. It was clear that Hendry was going to win, but the question was how fast would she run. She continued her pace as she entered the track, and finish storng around the fields, to break the tape at 18:43, to secure a new course record. Pierce followed, but was DQ'd for not going around a stake in the last 250m, tough luck for sure. Lundkvist was able to finihs 2nd as a result in a fine 19:26. The Red Storm packed them in from 3-6th showing an incredible pack led by Chick (20:02), Dellatore (20:07), Chamberlain (20:13), & Dugas (20:17), this was enough to secure the team victory for Scarborough as well.
