Class C Boys Race Recap
The Class C race was another triumph for senior Wade Davis (Hall-Dale) as he made it look easy with a 46 second victory over freshman Matt McClintok (Madison). The race was very similar to the way Davis won the Western Regional the previous week. Davis was out front earlier and established his lead, coming through the mile in a quick 4:58. This was good enough for a 16 second advantage over Graham Pearsell (Foxcroft Acad) & McClintok. In 4th leading the way for eventual state champion Monmouth was Matt McCollett (5:16). In the next pack it was Alex Branson & Ethan Masselli from Lisbon, coming through in 5:21. Boothbay, the Western Regional winner was well positioned at the mile, but it looked like Monmouth was going to be a challenge as they had 4 guys in the top 20.
As the race continued, Davis’s lead continued to increase, as he hit 2 mile in 10:36, 36 seconds up on the competition. After the race Davis would comment “It was muddy and windy, I know this is a faster course, but it was hard with no one pushing me to run faster”. McClintok was next across the 2 mile marker at 11:12, he held a 4 second edge over Pearsell & McCollett. Branson & Masselli were around 11:20 holding down spots 4 & 5, but it was Pat Romar (Winthrop) 11:24 nipping at their heels. Romar moved up a lot during mile 2. Boothbay’s first runner was in 8th was freshman Chase Brown. Boothbay still looked good with a mile to go, but Monmouth Academy had 3 runners in the top 10 and was running much better than they had at the Western regional just one week ago.
The last mile once again saw Davis maintain his lead, as he crossed with his 2nd straight Class C XC title, running 16:40. His margin of victory was 46 seconds. After the race Davis said “It was a pretty good run, I was hoping for a faster time, but there is nothing better than winning”. Looking ahead to next week Davis commented, “I am going to continue to tapering, go out fast and hope to have a good race.”
Crossing the line 2nd was the freshman McClintok in 17:26, he held off a hard charging Pearsell (17:28). Next across was McCollett (17:40) with a hard charging Romar in 5th (17:44), Lisbon had the next two finishers across in 6th & 7th with Masselli (17:45) & Branson (17:46). Monmouth’s #2 runner Patrick McInnis was 8th (17:46) with Brown from Boothbay in 9th (19:52), and #3 for Monmouth Kevin Desmond rounding out the top 10, running a great last mile (17:53).
On the strength of 3 runners in the top 10 McCollett (4th), Patrick McInnis (8th) & Kevin Desmond (10th) Monmouth Academy surprised pre-race favorite Boothbay, to win the Class Boys title with 72 points. Boothbay held on for 2nd with 83, with defending champion Winthrop 87 points putting up a good fight, while Foxcroft Academy the Eastern Maine champion was 4th with 88 points. 16 points was all that separated the top 4 teams in Class C, very close competition.

Class C Girls Race Recap
Coming into the Class C girl’s race Adele Espy (Waynflete) the defending state champion was the pre-race favorite coming off a strong winning performance at the Western Regional, early one she was challenged by the Eastern Maine Champion, Grace Boutot (Fort Kent) as they ran stride for stride for the first 800. Espy eventually would gain control at the front, and with her long pony tail swaying back and forth with every stride, she hit the mile in 5:39, this gave her a 16 edge over Boutot, who was through the mile in 5:55. Behind the leaders, it was Chelsea Oldfield (Foxcroft), just a freshman in 3rd (6:08), with Jocelyn Lawyerson (Valley), the Western Maine runner-up in 4th (6:10). In 5th was Bernard (Fort Kent) through in 6:12. There was a small gap, then came Anna Doyle (Winthrop) with Jane Larlee (Mattanawcook) (6:20). In 7th was Kerstin Grenier (Monmouth).
Espy looking very strong as she made the turn towards the outer field loop after the woods section, was in totally control and just letting her stride take her. She came through in 12:09, which was 50 seconds up on Boutot, who was holding onto the 2nd spot. Closing in was Oldfield (13:07), with Bernard moving up to 4th (13:10). In 5th was Lawyerson (13:20). Larlee moved up one spot to 6th (13:35), with Grenier into 7th (13:45). Doyle from Winthrop fell back to 9th but still looked strong (13:50), rounding out the top 10 at the 2 mile marker was Brandy Carle (Calais) 13:55. The team race looked tight, but Waynflete was moving up well by the 2 mile mark and looked ready to make a strong move in mile 3. Monmouth was having a strong day, while Western runner-up Lisbon didn’t have any one in the top 15 at the 2 mile mark.
At the finish line Espy had plenty left in the tank and she sprinted home to capture her 2nd straight Class C title, her time 19:04, a 1:16 ahead of the runner-up Boutot, who ran a personal best 20:21. In 3rd was Oldfield, in another pr 20:38, while Bernard finished up the last mile strong to get 4th (20:47). In 5th was Lawyerson (21:07), with Larlee (21:24) in 6th. Doyle used a strong last mile to finish strong to nab 7th (21:34), with Grenier 8th (21:35). Carle moved up one spot to 9th (21:58), while Kelsley Ottman (Foxcroft) finished 10th (22:03).
Waynflete really moved up in the last mile to put away a close race, Emily Trafton moved up 5-6 places over the last mile to 14th & Zoe Sobel moved past others to reach 15th, they ended up with 49 points to secure back-to-back titles. The margin of victory was 31 over runner-up Monmouth Academy (80 points), with Lisbon just 2 points back in 3rd with 82 points. There was a tie for 4th with Mattanawcook Academy edging out St. Dom’s for 4th with the better 6th runner.

Class A Boys Race Recap
The stage was set for an epic battle for the team title with three teams with legit shots at winning. Last week Cheverus surprised Scarborough in the Western Regional edging them for the title with a better 6th runner as the teams were tied at 40 points a piece after 5. In the East, defending state champion Lewiston dispatched the rest of the competition for an easy victory. No one knew who was going to come out of top, as the teams were evenly matched on paper.
With the race under way it didn’t look like anyone really wanted to lead as there was a pack of 10-15 athletes all running together for the first mile. At the front of the pack heading towards the mile marker it was Matt Driscoll (Lewiston) & Will Geoghegan (Brunswick) assuming the pacing duties, with Luke Fontaine (Cony), Kelton Cullenberg (Mt. Blue), Jack Terwilliger (Cheverus), Nate Hathaway (Scarborough) just to name a few that came through in 5:04, The next pack was through in 5:08 had the likes of Tim Belanger (Bonny Eagle), Ben Morrison (Massabesic), Craig Robinson (Scarborough), Taylor Dundas (Cheverus), Liam Cassidy (Brunswick), & Tim Woods (Cheverus).
The race stretched out a lot in mile 2, when the runners came out of the woods heading towards to 2 mile the lead group was down to 5. Heading the lead pack was Geoghegan, Fontaine, Terwilliger, Cullenberg, & Hathaway all coming through in 10:36 to 10:40 range. Moving up well during the 2nd mile was Robinson, as he was now in 7th place, looking very strong. Dundas along with Robbie Leeman & Driscoll from Lewiston were all in the top 10 as well. As the runners ran through the team title was still tight, although Cheverus took a blow when Andrew Snyder dropped out of the race just before the 2 mile mark, he was running in the top 20 at the time. Sam Chick (Scarborough) was the next Red Storm runner through the 2 mile around 18-19th spot.
The final mile saw the pace quicken, as the lead pack started to dwindle, first it was Cullenberg who fell back, then Terwilliger. As the lead pack of three (Geoghegan, Fontaine & Hathaway) hit the serious of sharps turns and uphills, Geoghegan made the first move to try and shake the pack. Geoghegan said “I made a small move on the sharp uphill section to see if I could get away.” Both Fontaine & Hathaway responded and the runners were stride for stride as they ran around the pond down to the muddy part of the course. No one was budging, just before heading up to the finishing straight in a small gully, Geoghegan made the move that would win him the Class A title. “I made a move in the little gully before we climbed up the final hill.” Hathaway would say, “I didn’t realize that Will had gotten a small gap on the uphill, I knew I had to start moving when we got to the top.” With a small gap opening the runners took off on the long finishing straight, Geoghegan held a small advantage as they hit the finally downhill before the finish, but Hathaway hadn’t given up and he launched into a full out kick, gaining with every stride. As the finish line approached the race was still in doubt, both runners leaned. Geoghegan held off Hathaway by the slimmest of margins, just .26 seconds, as he ran 16:16.40 to Hathaway’s 16:16.66. Fontaine was a strong 3rd in 16:20. The battle for 4th was another tight sprint to the finish with Robinson moving all the way to get 4th over Terwilliger by .07 seconds. Cullenberg was 6th (16:31) with Brunswick Liam Cassidy 7th (16:38). Dundas was the #2 man for Cheverus in 8th (16:51), followed by Leeman (16:55) & Belanger in 10th (16:56). The first 11 finishers broke 17 minutes.
The Red Storm had a great day on the trails, with 2 guys in the top 4, and then 4 more guys from the 15th -29th (Sam Chick-15th, Sean Griffi-19th, Brad Nakanashi-26th & Zach Brown -29th)(for a total of 62 points) they were champions once again, this is Scarborough’s 4th Class A State Championship in the last 5 years. With the win, Scarborough avenged it’s only loss of the year to Cheverus, in the process the Red Storm averaged 16:57 for 5k for the top 5. The race for 2nd place was very close, with Eastern Maine Champion Lewiston taking it by 4 points over Cheverus (98-102). Brunswick ran well for 4th (148 points) with Massabesic rounding out the top 5 with 157 points.

Class A Girls Race Recap
The Class A race was expected to be a battle between Western Maine champion Scarborough & Eastern Maine champion Brewer, with the subplot being the dynamic freshman running at the front of the pack, and whether or not one of them would break the course record.
The pace for this race was hot right away, with Emily Durgin (Bonny Eagle) running stride for stride with Western Maine champion Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) both freshman. As this duo hit the mile in a blistering 5:24, Durgin surged to the lead, around the tight right hand turn that saw dropped many harriers to their knees because of the mud, Leonardi was the victim. Durgin gained a small edge but Leonardi didn’t panic, after the race, she said “My dad and I were at nationals a couple years ago and saw one of the favorites go down, he told me that it may happen to me and when it did to stay relaxed and not try to make up all the lost ground at once.” The rest of the pack was fast as well with another freshman, Fiona Hendry (Cheverus) crossing at 5:28. Olivia MacKenzie (McCauley) was 4th in 5:35 with Rachel Wilkinson (Gorham) rounding out the top 5 at 5:39 with Hannah Pierce (Massabesic) on her heels. Lauren Fecteau (McCauley) was in 7th, still at a quick 5:49 with Amelia Lundkvist (Cheverus) & Vickie Hewey (Sanford) holding down the 9th & 10th spots (5:55). The team was tight at the mile with the edge going to Scarborough, but both Brewer & Massabesic were running well.
Mile 2 the heavy weight boxing match continued as Leonardi regained her composure after the fall and continues the blistering pace, coming through in 11:30, the difference this time was she had company at the front as Durgin was running her best race of the season only 2 seconds back in 11:32. Not giving up hope, Hendry was just 11 seconds back coming through in 11:41. Moving up to 4th was Wilkinson (12:04) with MacKenzie hanging on in 5th (12:09). In 6th was Pierce who was closing the gap with each stride (12:14). Also moving up during mile 2 were Lundkvist into 7th (12:35) with both Hewey & Melody Lam (Mt. Blue), the Eastern Maine champion. At the 2 mile despite not having a girl in the top 10 Scarborough looked primed to win its first Class A title, with senior Whitney Chamberlain leading the way in the 12th position, behind her was Melissa Dellatorre in around 15th place, with teammate Abby Chick in the top 20 as well.
The last mile continued the duel between Leonardi & Durgin, with Abbey holding on for the win, running the fastest time of the day, 18:03, to win her first state championship. Durgin finished off her strong run in 18:16, while Hendry finished 3rd in 18:28. The top all freshman all under 18:30, is this the start of something special? Looks like we should expect fast times for the next three years. The first non-freshman was junior Rachel Wilkinson who had a personal best 19:03 as she was 4th. In 5th was Pierce who led Massabesic to a 3rd place finish in the team race (19:12). Olivia MacKenzie was 6th (19:30), then there was a close finish for 7th 7 8th between Hewey (19:36) & Lam (19:37).
The top sophomore in the race was 9th place finisher Katie Spies (Mt. Ararat) 19:50 with Erin Flatley (Windham) rounding out the top 10 with a 19:54. 11 girls were under 20 minutes today a solid performance across the board.
Leonardi spoke after the race, “I knew that Durgin would be much closer today without the hills, I wanted the pace to be fast and it was.” “With a mile to go, I knew I had to keep pushing, using all the short hills to my advantage.” Looking at to the New Englands next week it will be a great opportunity for this group to see what level they are currently at against the rest of New England. Leonardi added, “I just want to do my best at New Englands.”
The team race turned out to be a Red Storm. Scarborough behind an 11th place finish from senior captain Chamberlain along with a 14th from Abby Chick, 15th Melissa Dellatorre, 20th from Sarah Dugas 40th place finish from Libby Davis- to give them 85 points. The runner-up trophy went to Brewer, who edged Massabesic with a better 6th runner as the two teams were tied with 134. In 4th was Mt. Blue with 162 & 5th went to Bonny Eagle who scored 170.

Class B Boys Race Recap
Heading into this race, Greely was the heavy pre-race favorite to win the team title. The individual title was expected to go to Western Maine champion Matt Rand (Cape) but a strong challenge from Alex Moser (York) Western Maine runner-up as well as Eastern Maine champion Sam Seekins (Eastern) was expected.
The leaders were established at the front of the pack just 800m in, but a surprise leader was Patrick O’Donnell (Medomak). As the race got closer to the mile, the pack started to take form. At the mile it was Seekins leading with Rand & Moser in tow as they came through in the fastest first mile of the day 4:56. The Greely trio of Mark McCauley, James LePage, & Logan Price were next in 5:04. 7th place was O’Donnell (5:06) with Kenedi Hall (Fryeburg) 5:08 in 8th along with Chris Flathers (Cape), Ben Chapman (Ellsworth) & Dylan Lajoie (Poland) in tow.
The pace remained fast during mile 2, but there was a new leader at the front of the pack, Rand was closely followed by Moser as they hit the two together at 10:21, by far the fastest split of the day. Seekins was hanging on well in 3rd, just 2 seconds back in 10:23. The Greely pack was together, and as they hit two miles in 10:34, McCauley looked to be ready to click the pace down a notch. Next through in 7th & 8th was Flathers & Chapman in 10:51, with Ryan James & Lajoie in 9th & 10th in 10:59. Greely was comfortably ahead, as they had 4 guys in the top 15th with another in the top 20 with a mile to go.
The last mile Rand & Moser ran stride for stride until the twisty, steep uphill section, the same place Moser made his move at the Festival of Champions; he did it again and got the jump on Rand. Once Moser was in the lead, he never relinquished it, as he powered home to the fastest time of the day 16:04, and an 11 second victory over Rand. He immediately exited the shoot and went back to cheer on the rest of his team as they finished. Moser said after the race, “I took the lead at the same spot as FOC, I can never tell with Matt how he is feeling in a race, and I thought he was going to come back at me.” Asked about coming up the homestretch alone, he responded “I was thinking just like FOC, just go-go as fast as I could.” Moser thought that the York fans were very helpful, “they were everywhere, and it was a big boost.” Moser was also quick to comment on his team, “I am really proud of my team today they ran great.”
McCauley was the first Greely runner across the line in 3rd, as he once again ran a great last mile to notch another pr, 16:19. Seekins showed his toughness holding on for 4th in 16:25, with LePage rounding out the top 5 with his 16:33 clocking. Greely’s #3 runner Logan Price was next in 6th (16:37). Cape’s #2 Flathers finished 7th (16:52), just edging out Chapman of Ellsworth by less than a second (16:52). Ryan James running on his home course had a strong day finishing 9th (17:08) with the top freshman boy on the day Tim Follo of Falmouth in 17:08 as well. In total 8 runners were under 17 minutes.
Greely dominated the team race as expected with 3 runners in the top 6 and 4th runner Andy Fitch (11th) & #5 runner Sam Johnston (14th), they scored 38 points for a 50 point margin of victory. The Rangers had the best overall team after all the class results were combined too and an impressive 16:50 average for the top 5 runners. Cape Elizabeth behind seniors Rand & Flathers were the runner-ups with 88 points. Falmouth ran a strong 3rd with 105 points, while York (143) & Yarmouth (164) completed the top 5.

Class B Girls Race Recap
Cross country meets aren't won on paper. Pure and simple.
Yes, the Greely boys and Cape Elizabeth girls were heavily favored to romp through the Class B field at Saturday's state championship meets at Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast, but the Rangers and Capers had a chance, on the grandest of all Maine cross country stages, to showcase the power, grace and talent that had made them Maine's top teams throughout the season.
Both teams got the job done in emphatic fashion, as the Cape girls tucked all seven runners in the top 20 to win with 36 points.
While the Capers were taking care of business, there was a great battle for second going on between Freeport and Greely.
The Falcons won that bout on the strength of their 3-4-5 runners, compiling 116 points to Greely's 117. York finished third with 132 points while Eastern Maine champion Mount Desert Island rounded out the top five with 148.
Abby Mace, yet another strong competitor in Maine's fine schoolgirl class of 2012, easily annexed the individual crown in 18:48.59 over the fast 5K course.
Cape Elizabeth was powered up front by junior Emily Atwood, who placed second overall and first among scoring runners in 19:32.74. Kelsey Barton in third and Rachel Nichols in ninth also had top-10 performances for the Capers while Catherine Tierney in 11th, Hannah Doss in 12th, Marita Stressenger in 14th and Paige Kozlowski in 16th rounded out the lineup.
"Everyone raced great, we were all really happy," commented Atwood. "We were just real excited and pumped up coming into this race."
The Capers had a remarkably fast pack time of 44 seconds, which leads to hardware more often than not on this level.
Other top-10 individuals included Brianne Dunn of Ellsworth in third, Tess Carley of Greely in fifth, York's Michaela Swiatek in sixth, Sarah Dickens of John Bapst in seventh, Dacie Manion of Old Town in eighth, Greely's Mallory Goding in ninth and Moly Susla of Freeport in 10th.
