Bangor Boys & Girls Sweep PVC Large School Titles
Sophomore Alyssa Elliott led the Bangor Rams to a convincing 26 point victory over cross town rival Brewer. Elliott was a triple winner on the day adding 36 points on the day for the Rams. She swept the jumps with a 17-0 1/4 winning effort in the long & a 35 -11 3/4 leap to win the triple. Elliott added a win in the 200m crossing the line first in a time of 27.71, and a third place in the 400m.
The Rams also got wins from Sofia Wittman in the pole vault as she cleared 9-6. The 4x100m relay team was victorious in a time of 52.99.
The 400m was a key event for the Rams as the finished 2-3-4-5 to score 20 points.
The Witches of Brewer did plenty of winning on the day as they captured four events. Ashley Tanguay took the javelin with a bomb of 120-5. While Sophia Inman cleared 5-2 to win the high jump on fewer missed over Gracie Sanborn of Old Town. Sophomore Abby Stroup captured the 300m hurdle title with a fine 51.33 effort, and Morgan Honey took the 100m hurdles in 16.37 leading a 1-2 sweep for Brewer.
Old Town thrower Emma Hargreaves broke the 36 year old shot put record of Diane LeClair with a personal best and state leading 41-10 1/2. The mark moves Hargreaves up to the sixth best thrower in Maine history. She would add another victory with a 107-8 toss in the discus. Her teammate Claudia Damboise was the runner-up in both events throwing 37-0 3/4 & 103-11.
The other record breaker on the day was freshman Izabelle Trefts of Old Town who surpassed the mark of 7:40.67 set back in 2009 by Hannah Saunders of Caribou, with her winning effort of 7:34.55.
Hampden Academy distance standout Helen Shearer completed the tough distance triple. Shearer started it off winning the 1600m in a time of 5:15.56, followed up by a 2:23.42 in the 800m and closed out with a 11:32.61. She also added a leg on the winning 4x400m relay for the Broncos.
On the boys side the Rams of Bangor had five event wins to place them to a comfortable 68 point victory over Hampden Academy
Landyn Francis won the 100m for the Rams in a time of 11.43 his teammate Andrew Munroe added a victory in the 200m with a 23.30.
In the 2 mile Dwight Knightly posted 10 more points for the Rams with his winning 10:16.17. Knightly also ran a leg on the winning 4x800 (8:28.0) while senior Peter Blackwell cleared a seasonal best 12-6 to win the pole vault.
Maxx Smith won the javelin with a toss of 138-10 for Bangor.
Hampden Academy distance standout Wyatt Lord was a double winner taking the 1600m in a seasonal best 4:28.12, he came back to take the 800m in a strong 2:01.13. His teammate Jason Mathies was the runner-up in both events running 4:30.91 & 2:02.54.
Hermon's Zachary Beaton was a standout winning four individual events on the day. Beaton captured the 110m hurdles to start the day off with an excellent time of 14.72. The time broke his own record of 14.87 that was established a year ago. He completed a sweep of the hurdle event with his 40.87 effort in the 300m hurdles. On the jumps runway Beaton dominated again this time posting a 21-2 1/4 effort in the long jump and a 41-5 1/2 leap in the triple jump.
Gilbert Isaacs of MDI won the shot put with a 52-1 3/4 effort while Brewer's Jacob McCluskey captured the discus title with a throw of 154-6.
