Eli Hultstrom surprise second place finish in the mile helped York defend its title

On the boys side the York boys made it three state titles in a row as they tallied 51 points to edge Greely by 5. The Wildcats entered the 4x200m down by 5 points, and running out of heat four of six, they shocked the field with a time of 1:38.0 to secure 10 points and seal the state title. Coming into the meet York was only suppose to score 26.5 points but of course like they have down the past few years easily exceeded expectations.

The high jump was the key event for the Wildcats as they scored 20 points behind 2-3-4-6 finish. Junior Rhys Evans was the top performer for York in the event with a 6-0 clearance.

Senior Eli Hultstrom provided the Wildcats with a huge spark with his race in the mile. Hultstrom entered as the fifth seed but that didn't deter him from moving up, and move up he did as he was in contention for the win down the home stretch nabbing second place and eight important points. His teammate rushed the track knowing the significance of his finish.

The two mile was similar where senior Josiah Mackaman was the ninth seed but ran with the lead pack for most of the race. Mackaman would post a fourth place finish providing York unexpected points.

Greely who was expected to score thirty points based off seeds easily did that thanks to twenty points in the two mile behind a 1-2 finish from senior Riley Franklin, and Sam Wilson. Wilson won the mile earlier in the meet as well for ten key points. Franklin along Wilson, Brady Fluet and Elias Leggat-Barr teamed up for a second place effort in the 4x800.

The Rangers had the lead heading to the 4x200 had to settle for the runner-up trophy, but considering where they entered the meet to start the day the Rangers had a lot to be happy about with a runner-up finish.

Yarmouth's Chris Koskinen had a big day as he jumped a personal best 13-9 to win the pole vault, earlier in the meet he set a huge personal best in the 200m as he finished as the runner-up just .01 out of first.

The shot put competition was a good one as senior William Carrolton of Morse threw a personal best 55-1 1/2 as he held off a strong effort from Sean Neal of Brewer who also set a personal best of 53-11 1/4.

Freshman Conor Morin put on quite a show in the high jump as he was the only one to clear 6-2. Morin successfully cleared 6-2 1/2 and 6-3 as well, complete with a back flip on the mat after each clearance. His winning mark sets a new freshman state all-time in the event.
