Turn Back The Clock Tuesday: Sharif & Lord 800m Duel
The 800m at the Class A state meet was one to remember as Mahamed Sharif of Westbrook battled Wyatt Lord of Hampden Academy in one of the best 800m races the state has ever witnessed.
Sharif entered the meet with a 1:52.88 best on the season a time he clocked at the Battle Road Twilight meet. Wyatt Lord entered with a 2:00.65 seasonal best, and a personal best of 1:57.42 from the indoor season. Many expected this race to be a no brainer, Sharif takes the leads, and is never challenged. However that is why the run the race and championships aren't decided by previous efforts, Lord didn't get the message and made it a race to remember.
In the end Sharif showed the heart of champion as he battled back over the last 50m to win in a fine 1:54.33, the second fastest performer in Class A history, while Lord was rewarded for his effort clocking 1:54.66, the ninth fastest performer in state history, and fourth best in Class A state meet history.
