Way Back Wednesday: Morris Anchors Scarborough to 2012 Indoor Title

The 2012 Class A State Championship came down to the final event, the boys 4x200m relay. Deering entered the final event with a nine-point lead over Scarborough and was a strong candidate to score in the relay. The Rams competing in section three had trouble with the third exchange that resulted in a disqualification. This set the stage for section four of the 4x200m relay.

Scarborough led off with senior Ryan Jamison who had finished sixth in the open 200m running 23.61 earlier in the meet. Jamison got the stick around first to senior Greg Viola and after a slight juggle of the baton, Viola sped around the track holding a slight the lead for the Red Storm over Gorham, with Cheverus closing in. Junior Austin Doody had the stick on the third leg he led heading into the final turn and swung out wide which allowed an opening on the inside of lane one, Gorham moved into lane one but with the anchor legs already set, they had to slow down and move back to lane two to make the pass. On anchor for Scarborough was Nick Morris who won the Class A cross-country title in the fall. Additionally, to add drama to race, Morris was competing in his first meet since mid-December because of injury. Morris held the lead down the final straight with Gorham's anchor Nathan Bucknell nipping at his heels, while Cheverus was closing fast. It was a photo finish at the line, and when the clock flashed Scarborough 1:34.99 first the Red Storm not only won the race but erased the nine-point deficit to win the team title.
