Maine Girls 2020 Cross-Country All-Sophomore Team

The 2020 Maine cross-country was well beyond unique due to COVID-19, starting with a late start to the season, wave starts during meets, and of course, ending before the state meet. Despite all the changes the class of 2023 had plenty of success on the trails this fall. These five individuals below were the sophomores that we thought stood out this fall among all their peers.

Thea Crowley (George Stevens Academy)

Crowley had an excellent sophomore season that saw her win four races including the PVC Class C state qualifier. Thea was the runner-up at the Maine Festival of Champions clocking a seasonal best time of 19:37.91. Look for Crowley to be one of the individual favorites in Class C next fall.

Annabelle Brooks (Cheverus)

Brooks successfully made the transition from Portland to Cheverus this fall. She won four out of the five races she ran this fall. At the SMAA Cumberland County Championship Brooks finished sixth in a seasonal best 19:48.14 to qualify for the state meet. Annabelle will be one of the top returners in Class A next fall.

Kayley Bell (Caribou)

Bell won all six races she ran in this fall including the PVC Class B title. She won the PVC title by twenty-plus seconds helping her Viking squad to the state meet. Her fastest 5k on the season was a 20:08.50 effort. Look for Bell to be one of the top runners in Class B next fall

Rachel Cummings (Gorham)

Cummings was much improved this fall and that showed in each race. She finished second in three different races and ran a personal best of 20:20.50 for 5k. At the SMAA Cumberland County Championship Cummings finished 10th overall helping the Rams qualify for the state as a team. Look for even more from Cummings next fall as she continues to improve.

Payton Bell (Edward Little)

Bell won four races this fall including the KVAC Class A South race. Bell qualified for the Class A state meet as an individual and ran a 5k seasonal best of 20:43 on the season. Look for Bell to continue to excel next fall as she looks to be one of the best in the KVAC and all of Class A.
