Maine Girls 2020 Cross-Country All-Senior Team

The 2020 Maine cross-country was well beyond unique due to COVID-19, starting with a late start to the season, wave starts during meets, and of course, ending before the state meet. Despite all the changes the class of 2021 had plenty of success on the trails this fall. These five individuals below were the seniors that we thought stood out this fall among all their peers.

Sofie Matson (Falmouth)

Matson completed her fourth consecutive undefeated season in the state of Maine this fall. She was on track to win her fourth consecutive Class A individual state title but COVID-19 had other plans. On the year she won five races running 18:31 or faster in each race. Her best effort was a 17:37.7 5k effort at Brunswick and last time out she won the SMAA Cumberland County championship race helping her team qualify for the state meet as a team. Sofie signed her National Letter of Intent to Columbia University this fall.

Karley Piers (Falmouth)

Piers had an excellent senior season that saw her run a 5k personal best of 18:02.40. Karley finished second in each of her five races only losing to her teammate Sofie Matson on the season, and in the process ran under 19 minutes for 5k on three occasions. Piers finished second at the SMAA Cumberland County Championship running 18:35 to help her Yachstmen squad finish second and qualify for the state meet. Piers had strong showing at all three state meets placing 7th, 8th, and 2nd. Next fall Karely will run for Florida Gulf Coast University.

Erin McCarthy (Bangor)

McCarthy had an undefeated senior season that saw her win four races. She won the Maine Festival of Champions in a personal best 19:21.55 and also took the KVAC Class A title. Erin guided her Bangor team to its first-ever KVAC title this fall and a spot in the Class A state meet. In her career, Erin placed 32nd, 14th, and 8th in the Class A state meet.

Olivia Reynolds (Maine Coast Waldorf)

Reynolds ran undefeated on the 2020 cross-country winning five races. She was on track to win a fourth consecutive Class C individual title but COVID-19 had other plans. Reynolds had a 5k best of 19:45 on the season. She closed her season with an easy victory at the WMC Class C Championship helping her Maine Coast team to the title, and a spot in the Class C state meet.
