Class B Boys recap

Class B Boys   Race Video

As with the girls race, the boys race saw the defending individual champion Alex Moser (York) trying to repeat and the Greely Rangers trying to 3-peat for the team title. If last week’s Western Maine regional was any indication Moser was going to have his hands full in trying to repeat, and Greely the heavy favorite, had to run without #4 Sam Humphries who was out with an illness.

Taking off the line like it was his specialty race on the track, the 800m, Darick Frye (Hampden) shot to the front of the race, taking it out at a blistering pace. He got around a 25m lead as the runners hit the 800m mark before entering the woods for the first time. Frye ripped through the mile in the fastest split of the day 4:54, with Moser 7 seconds back at 5:01 and Silas Eastman (Fryeburg) right behind. Eastern Maine champion Sam Seekins was next in 5:06 with Ryan James (Belfast) 7 seconds back in a pack with Ben Chapman (Ellsworth), Tim Follo (Falmouth) & Christian Sleeper (Caribou).

By the time the runners made it to the 1 ½ mile mark there was a new leader at the front as Alex Moser had taken command of the race, opening up a sizable lead as the runners approached the 2 mile marker. Frye remained in 2nd, with Eastman and Mark McCauley (Greely) closing the gap. Back in 5th was Seekins who had Logan Price (Greely) on his heels. Through the 2 mile in 10:21 Moser was still in control, 5 seconds up on Eastman, who looked to be ready to make a strong move, Frye held on to 3rd while McCauley was through in 4th. Price moved ahead of Seekins for 5th.

The last mile didn’t change much at the front; Moser was able to maintain his lead to the finish line to capture his 2nd straight individual title, clocking 16:14 to win over the freshman Silas Eastman by 7 seconds. McCauley continued to run well over the last mile moving up to claim 3rd, the early leader Frye held on nicely for 4th place, while Logan Price rounded out the top 5, giving the Greely Rangers two of the first 5 finishers. Tim Follo improved his spot over the final mile finishing 6th, with Seekins holding on for 7th followed by James and Chapman, Greely’s Sam Johnston finished out the top 10.

Greely was able to 3-peat behind 3 of the first 10 finishers, scoring 74 points to defeat runner-up WMC rival York by 41 points. The Wildcats matched the success of their girl’s team by earning the runner-up plaque over WMC foes Falmouth and Cape Elizabeth. York had the individual champ and just one other in the top 20 (Dan Herbein-20th) but packed in their next three scorers in the top 40. The trio of teams was separated by just 10 points as the west swept the first four places. Eastern Maine champion Caribou had everybody beat for 2nd through 4 runners as they had 4 in the top
