York Boys Surprise Class B Again

The York Wildcats have become known for showing up to the Class B indoor track and field championship as the underdogs and at the end of the meet standing atop the podium raising the state championship trophy. 2022 was no expectation as the Wildcats came into the meet seeded to score 39.5 points which had them third based on season-best performances of those athletes entered in each event, at the end of the night York amassed 64.5 to win the meet by 10.5 points over Bucksport. The title was the third in a row for Coach Ted Hutch's squad.

The 4x800m relay got things started for the Wildcats as they entered the meet as the fourth seed. The team of Seth Hultstrom, Hunter Pruett, Sy Macgovern, and Landon Morrison improved their best time on the season by twenty-four seconds to clock 8:41.02 to win the event and secure ten points in the title chase. Pruett led the way with an excellent 2:06.40 effort.


Over in the shot put junior Matt Charpentier was dominating the competition as expected, on his final throw with the win under his belt he unleashed a  cannon of a throw that stretched the tape out to 56-6 1/4. The mark shattered the 43-year old record of 55-11 set by Lawrence standout Jim Dawson. The currently ranks 38th best in the country and 10th best amongst juniors.

Senior Colin Monsen came ready to compete in his final indoor championship. Monsen came in seeded 5th with a best of 9.13 and lowered it to 8.92 in the trials and then dropped in down to 8.63 to finish fourth. He set a new personal best in the triple jump 40-8 1/4 to earn four more points.

Speaking of seniors stepping up, Seth Hultstrom improved by more than a second clocking 54.54 to place third in the 400m, while Nick Banakos running out of the second section recorded a new Wildcat school record of 23.73 to finish third. Nick came into the meet seeded 15th overall. The duo teamed up with senior Riley Cronin and sophomore Nick Hoy to finish second in 1:36.89.


Mt Desert Island sophomore Miles Burr was the standout sprinter of the meet. Burr started with a win in the 55m dash as he clocked 6.68 to win by .02. In the 200m, it was another photo finish as Burr recorded a new personal best of 23.0 to edge Frazier Dougherty of Yarmouth 23.10. Dougherty set a personal best earlier in the meet of 51.80 to win the 400m dash.

Another sophomore won two titles on the day as well with Bucksport William Hileman using strong kicks to win both the mile and 2mile. Hileman ran a 66.52 last 400m for a 4:46.73 effort. In the 2mile he closed in 68.10 to finish in a time of 10:20.92.


Senior Colin Simpson of Bucksport swept the horizontal jumps as he leaped out to 21-11 1/2 in the long and added a 43-5 3/4 personal best effort on his final jump to seal the triple. In the 800m, Sumner's Kaleb Colson held off the field with a 2:04.37 as he led the race from start to finish.

Old Town junior Corbin Flewelling cleared 6-2 to win the high jump with fewer misses, while Freeport sophomore Enoch Boudreau vaulted over 12-1 to win the pole vault.

Yarmouth closed out the track action with a 1:36.48 effort to win the 4x200m.

In the wheelchair division, Leavitt's Jonathan Schomaker won the mile (8:32.68) and 800m (3:53.72), while setting a new state meet record in the shot put (15-4 1/4) to break his own record.
