Maine MileSplit 2022 XC Team Countdown

With the calendar switching to August soon we wanted to switch gears from the track to the trails to get ready for the upcoming cross-country season. Athletes around the state are hitting the roads and trails building up a strong base in hopes of a successful cross-country in 2022, with the hopes of lifting the state championship as a team in November the ultimate goal. Our plan is to highlight who we think are the top 25 returning girls and boys xc teams over the next three weeks. Thanks to Cheverus XC/track coach Nick Denari for volunteering his time and efforts to put this countdown together.

LeAnne Ross placed 12th in the Class C state meet last fall for Houlton.

2022 Outlook: The 2022 Houlton squad will look to grab the title that eluded them a year ago. After beating Orono in the regional round, the tables were turned on the Shires at the State Championships, and Orono walked away with the title. Houlton will have to improve if they want to avoid the same fate this year. Class C 800m and 1600m champion Teanne Ewings gives Houlton plenty of firepower up front. It's hard to think anyone can beat Ruth White in the 5K, but if anyone can do it, it is Ewings, who has triumphed over White in the 1600m. If one or two of the Shires' other runners has a marked improvement, they will be in the mix for the title.
