XC Countdown 2022: #10 Portland Girls

Maine MileSplit 2022 XC Team Countdown

With the calendar switching to August soon we wanted to switch gears from the track to the trails to get ready for the upcoming cross-country season. Athletes around the state are hitting the roads and trails building up a strong base in hopes of a successful cross-country in 2022, with the hopes of lifting the state championship as a team in November the ultimate goal. Our plan is to highlight who we think are the top 25 returning girls and boys xc teams over the next three weeks. Thanks to Cheverus XC/track coach Nick Denari for volunteering his time and efforts to put this countdown together.

Samantha Moore led the Bulldogs last fall with a 12th place finish at the Class A state meet.

2022 Outlook: The 2022 Portland squad has a shot to surprise so people this year. The Bulldogs return everyone of note from last year, and there's reason to believe that things will get even better this season. Samantha Moore could be an individual title contender after running some impressive times on the track this spring. Following her is a group of seniors that have all broken 21 minutes in past years. Sigfridson ran 20:35 as a sophomore, Flint ran 20:37 as a freshman, and Holmes ran 20:54 as a freshman. Flint just had her best track season to date, PR'ing in all 3 distance events, so it is possible she might be ready to run some XC personal bests. Sophomore Ava Chadbourne was a State Meet qualifier indoors in the 2 Mile and broke 13 minutes for that race. If these successes translate over to the grass, watch out for the Bulldogs.
