XC Countdown 2022: #3 Freeport Boys

Maine MileSplit 2022 XC Team Countdown

With the calendar switching to August soon we wanted to switch gears from the track to the trails to get ready for the upcoming cross-country season. Athletes around the state are hitting the roads and trails building up a strong base in hopes of a successful cross-country in 2022, with the hopes of lifting the state championship as a team in November the ultimate goal. Our plan is to highlight who we think are the top 25 returning girls and boys xc teams over the next three weeks. Thanks to Cheverus XC/track coach Nick Denari for volunteering his time and efforts to put this countdown together.

Will Spaulding helped the Falcons to a Class B title last fall.

2022 Outlook: The Falcons will begin the 2022 season expecting to defend their 2021 Class B title. Senior leadership will be huge for Freeport, as they return 5 seniors with State Meet experience from last fall. Henry Horne will lead the way for the Falcons and is a favorite for the Class B individual title after winning the 1600m title on the track this spring. Will Spaulding had a great track season as well, covering 3200m in 10:37, which should translate well to the grass. Behind those two is a solid pack of runners that will look to improve into the 17-minute range this year. A new member of that pack could be freshman Alex Gilbert, who ran 5:11 for 1600m as an 8th grader at Freeport Middle School. If Freeport takes care of business this year, they should run away from all the other teams in Class B.
