To put it mildly, 2023 was an outstanding year for track & cross country superstar Maddox Jordan of Noble High School. During the last year, Jordan has won 5 individual state running titles, improved significantly on his personal best times, and became one of the top recruits in the country in the 2024 class (he committed to run for the University of Rhode Island on a full scholarship).

If someone who doesn't know the legendary track star looks him up on Milesplit, they'll see that he can run a 4:10.35 1600m and think "Wow, Maddox Jordan is an impressive runner". But Maddox is impressive for way more than just his track times. I raced against him for years when I was in high school, and he is without a doubt one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Maddox is extremely humble and very friendly. He never brags about his accomplishments or tries to be the center of attention; he just goes onto the track and puts up insane performance after insane performance. He is extremely self-motivated and continues to blow away the ambitious goals he sets for himself.

Maddox has put up amazing performances on the track throughout his high school career. He had an amazing freshman year that included a sub 4:30 1600m that was good enough to score at outdoor states, a very rare feat for a freshman boy that showed he was destined to be one of Maine's top high school runners ever. He kept up the hard work and dropped his 1600m time to 4:23 as a sophomore, but he wasn't going to stop there. His junior year included a 4:10 1600m & 1:56 800m and he managed to win both of those events at both the indoor & outdoor state meets for his first 4 individual state titles. He translated that success to cross country as a senior, running a PR of 15:30 and winning the XC state title. Maddox is off to a strong start again this indoor season and says he aims to "podium at nationals and beat the mile state record" before he graduates in June. But how has he been able to achieve all of these amazing results?

Maddox Jordan broke the SMAA mile record with a 4:19.62 early this season.

"Having people in my life who encourage me and great coaches to train me to the best of my ability" have been instrumental to his achievements. "Never taking a practice light" is his most important training strategy. He also loves the outdoors and lives a very active lifestyle that includes lots of surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, skiing, cliff jumping, and scuba diving. In the summer he works as a lifeguard on Ogunquit Beach, and the rigorous lifeguard training & competitions help him stay in shape during the track off-season. "I think the lifeguard training helps switch up the type of training I do and gives me a break from the high impact on my legs that comes with track while still working out".

Maddox also spends lots of his time working on a successful small business that he started with some of his friends, Caught Boarding. Caught Boarding designs & sells surfing-themed apparel and has a large online catalog at caughtboarding.com. He's planning to study aquaculture and fisheries and he says that his dream job would be something where he can study marine life. He's also nowhere near done with running. He's already thinking about goals for his college running career: "I want to go sub 4 in the mile my first season". We can't wait to see what lies ahead for Maddox!
