South Portland Leaps Their Way to Class A Championship

The South Portland Red Riots entered the triple jump the final event of the meet with 38 points. The Red Riots leaped over the rest of Class A as they scored 15 points in the event. Junior Arnaud Sioho set a new state record in the triple jump with his massive 46-10 3/4 effort. Sioho added a runner-up finish in the long jump (22-7), and a third-place finish in the 55m hurdles (8.00) to pace the Red Riots with 24 points. 


South Portland had a couple of athletes move up the ranks from their pre-meet seeds. In the shot put senior Henry Risch was the seventh seed but unleashed a huge 50-7 personal best on his final throw to move up to fourth overall. Sophomore Michael Lawlor was the 15th seed in the 800m, running in the slower section one, he won clocking 2:03.23 to place seventh overall.

Updated Class A State Meet Records

Junior Tyler Bryant cleared 6-2 in the high jump to finish fifth, he added another fifth in the triple jump (41-2 1/4). Evan Small gained six points with his third-place finish in the 2 mile (9:49.52) while Fischer Petrlik finished fifth in the mile (4:36.16)

Noble senior Maddox Jordan won the mile 4:17.23, the 800m (1:55.6), and the two-mile (9:45.12) to complete the distance triple. Jordan did so in impressive fashion leading the mile and 800 from start to finish.

In the 55m dash junior, Andre Clark of Marshwood broke the Class A state record twice on the day as he clocked 6.45 in the trials breaking the 6.46 record set back in 2018 by Jarett Flaker of Scarborough, and then an all-time state best of 6.38 in the final breaking his week-old record. Clark also won the 200m clocking 22.85 and anchored the Hawks 4x200 relay to a fourth-place finish.

In the long jump, Billy Albertson of Skowhegan set a state meet record with his winning leap of 22-7 1/2. Albertson set the tone with his first jump as he broke the 25-year-old record set by Nicholas Nappi of Cheverus (22-6 1/2). He added a runner-up finish in the triple jump with his personal best of 46-1, the mark is the seventh best in state history.


Gorham got a pair of wins on the day as senior Aidan Lee clocked a personal best of 7.82 to win the 55m hurdles, while junior Griffin Gammon won the high jump with a 6-6 clearance.

Sanford senior Tucker Walker had a monster meet as he threw over 53 feet three times including his winning effort 53-10. Hampden Academy junior Dylan Courtney won the pole vault with a 13-foot clearance. Aidan Greenleaf of Mt. Ararat took the 400m dash as he crossed the finish first in a time of 51.20. 

In the relays, Bonny Eagle won the opening 4x800 in a state-leading time of 8:23.03 as they held off a strong challenge from Portland. Falmouth closed the meet out with a state-leading 1:32.94 which was just off the state meet record.
