York Girls Repeat in Class B

York scored an impressive 60 of their 63 points from distance events as the Wildcats won a second consecutive team title. Senior Cary Drake led the way as she set a new state meet record in the mile (4:59.07) and finished second in the 800m (2:19.76) and 2 mile (11:32.28) to score 26 individual points to lead the Wildcats to victory. In the mile, Drake broke the 5:02.15 record set back in 2012 by Waterville's Bethanie Brown.


In the mile York scored 21 points in addition to Drake's state record, senior Molly Kenealy placed third (5:32.09), and sophomore Madelyn Hutchins was right behind her in fourth (5:33.48). The same trio posted 19 points in the 2 mile as Drake led a 2-3-4 finish. While in the 800m Drake (2:19.76) was the runner-up with sophomore Zoe Carroll finishing in third (2:20.80) and Kenealy snagging an eighth place (2:33) for 15 points. York also finished fourth in the 4x800. The 60 points scored by the distance runners from one team was the second most in state history, as Greely girls scored 74 distance points in 2002 back when the scoring was only six spots.

Updated Class B State Meet Records

MDI junior Amelia Vandongen set a new state meet record, winning the 800m at 2:14.83. She surpassed the 21-year-old record of 2:15.28 by Abby Chapman of Greely and recorded the sixth-best effort in state history.


In the jumps, Lucy Veilleux, a freshman from Old Town, won the long jump 17-1 1/2 and triple jump 34-3. Veilleux lost the lead to Greely freshman Victoria Zandan (17-0 1/2) before coming up with the winning jump on her final attempt. She left little doubt in the triple jump winning on her first attempt. Elyannah Briggs of Old Town won the high jump with a clearance of 5-4. Sarah Ouellette of Morse cleared 11-1 to win the vault and set a new state meet record. He leap bettered the 22-year-old mark of 11-0 by Chantelle Haggerty of Hermon. 


The 55m hurdles race was incredible as the top three were separated by .01 seconds. Leavitt senior Serae Fish pulled out the victory with her 9.08, behind her Sydney Legasse of John Bapst and Gabrielle Finelli both clocked 9.09. The other straightaway race the 55m saw Yarmouth's Abby Noble cross the line first in 7.53 to pull a mild upset. In the 200m, Madison Rose of Bucksport held off a strong challenge by Noble to win in 26.77 to 26.80 with sister Haley Rose in third at 26.81. The Rose sisters would team up in the 4x200 aiding the Golden Bucks to victory in 1:51.70.

Morse junior Shealyn Brochu won the 400m (61.0) while Teanne Ewings of Houlton/GHCA took the 2 mile (10:56.86) as she ran a negative split to win by 36 seconds. Orono's Dez Seeley slipped to second in the fifth round before launching her winning throw of 34-3 3/4.
