Sioho & Flaker Lead Teams to Class A State Tittles

South Portland junior Arnaud Sioho had a Class A State Championship for the ages on Saturday at Paul S. Hill Jr Stadium on the campus of Thornton Academy. Sioho joined an elite group of athletes who won four events in one state meet as he joined Sam Rusak (2016) and Peter Bogdanovich (1979). The junior started his day off with 23-2 1/4 in the long jump to set a new state meet record, surpassing the 23-0 1/2 mark by Frank Morang of Cheverus from 2021. Next up was the 110m hurdles where Sioho stormed to the win at 14.70. He followed it up with another state meet record this time in the triple jump with his 47-2 second-round effort. The mark surpassed the record set by former Red Riot Scott Sawyer of 46-5 in 1991. Arnaud finished his day with another dominating performance in the 300m hurdles as he set a new personal best of 38.67, the time ranks him as the seventh-best in state history.

Class A Boys State Meet Records


Behind Sioho's 40 individual points the Red Riots outlasted the Gorham Rams 79.5 to 79 as they captured the first outdoor team title since 2002. The 1600m racewalk was a big event for South Portland as junior Patrick Heffernan placed third while Alexandy Pierre finished fifth for ten team points. Senior Henry Risch came up big on his third-round throw in the discus as he tossed it out to 147-11 to finish in third place. The unsung hero of the meet was sophomore Michael Lawlor who wasn't feeling well yet managed a personal best 2:01.09 as he kicked home for third place and six important team points.


Andre Clark of Marshwood set a new state record in the 100m dash.


Marshwood junior Andre Clark set a new state meet record in the 100m as he won in a new personal best of 10.59. Clark anchored the winning 4x100 for the Hawks as he brought them from 7th place to first with a blazing anchor leg carry. He added a win in the 200m with an impressive 22.05 clocking in a race run into a headwind.


In the throws, Lewiston's Ryker Paradis was a standout as the junior tossed the shot 56-10 to win by more than four feet while in the discus on his final attempt, he set a new personal best with his 170-11 winning effort.

Gorham was led by senior Nolan Feyler who blew the field away in the 400m as he clocked 48.49 to win by almost a full second. Feyler was the runner-up in the 200m (22.41) and anchored the winning 4x400m relay (3:28.67) with the fastest split 48.79. The Rams also got a win from Griffin Gammon in the high jump (6-6).

Noble senior Maddox Jordan added two more state titles to his dominant senior season. Jordan took over the lead after an opening 62.76 quarter and closed in 62.27 his fastest lap of the race to cross the finish line in a time of 4:15.20 holding off a challenge from Portland's Nathan Blades. Jordan added his second title of the day in the 800m, where the future Rhode Island Ram ran wire to wire in near identical splits of 58.92 and 58.76 for a 1:57.68 victory. Blades returned in the 3200m to win his first individual track title as he pulled away from a pack after the 1600m and clocked a 67.59 final lap to run a personal best of 9:38.72.

Other winners included Rowan McDonald of Bonny Eagle in the 1600 race walk (7:26.80), Dylan Brown of Scarborough in the javelin (170-3), Bryce Holden of Mt. Ararat in the pole vault (13-0), and the Scarborough boys took the 4x800 relay (8:09.65).

Emerson Flaker led Scarborough to the team title with 30 individual points.

Emerson Flaker a junior from Scarborough did her part to lead the Red Storm of Scarborough as she won three individual events and ran a key leg on a winning relay. Flaker opened her day with a photo finish in the 100m as she and Makenna Drouin of Lewiston had identical times of 12.15, meet officials deemed Flaker the winner looking closer at the finish line photo (Flaker won 12.141 to 12.145). In the 400m, she led coming off the final turn and cruised to a 57.96 victory while in the 200m, she blitzed the first 100m and built up a substantial lead to cross the line first in 26.14. Closing out her day in the 4x400m relay Emerson got the baton in second place almost three seconds behind the leader before a 58.34 split brought the Red Storm into the lead by two and a half seconds passing the stick to senior Kyleigh Record who finished the relay in 4:08.23 for the victory.

Scarborough won its first outdoor title since 2012 behind six individual wins and a relay victory as they edged Bangor 101 to 86.5. Kyleigh Record went wire to wire in the 800m opening in 68.71 and closing it out with a strong final 200m for a 2:19.71. In the 3200m sophomore Laurel Driscoll opened with a 76.11 first lap and closed it out with a 76.20 to dominate the field with her 11:05.66 effort. Sophomore Isabella Harmon soared over 10-7 to win the pole vault on a tough day to vault with strong cross-winds.

Falmouth senior Ruby Prentiss was a standout in the throws as she tossed the shot 39-8 1/2 for the victory, she had four throws in her series over 39 feet and had a winning margin of over three feet. Prentiss secured the victory in the discus with her second-round effort of 129-1.

Lewiston's Makenna Drouin added two more state titles to her standout career. Drouin captured the 110m hurdles with a season-best 14.79. The Elon University-bound senior had a tougher time in the 300m hurdles but wouldn't be denied as she fought to the finish clocking 45.62 to hold off Anneliese Colin of Portland by .12 seconds.

In one of the best races of the day Portland junior Samantha Moore used a 69.48 final lap to pull away from Laurel Driscoll in the 1600m as she clocked a personal best of 4:55.69. 

Other winners were Lisi Palmer of Brunswick in the high jump with a 5-5 clearance, Lexi Morin of Brunswick took the win in the javelin with a toss of 122-3. Edward Little senior Saphyrn Fulgham leaped 17-4 1/2 on her first attempt to win the long jump while Windham junior Tayla Pelletier topped the field in the triple jump with her 36-6 1/4. Mt. Blue junior Brielle Tinker won the 1600 race walk in a personal best time of 8:33.46. Falmouth won the 4x800 (9:50.83), while Bangor took the 4x100 (49.96).
